thanks trojan, i got a quote for a air flow metre , $1080.00. maybe i should have asked for a air flow sensor instead. i thought it would be the same animal.cheers rossy.

Re: Strange Issue with My V6 (ITS ALL FIXED!!!)

          Guys,

Have read all the posts to do with AFS and the info there is very informative, very helpful. I have a couple of questions though. Does the AFS kick it in due to kms traveled or wear and tear due to driving habits and conditions etc? How many kms have you done before you are noticing some problems with the AFS? My Prado seems fine and has done about 102k, but am toying with the idea of cleaning or replacing it?

Also, someone spoke of the subject earlier, but with the Prado, has anyone had any problems with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), getting wet? I say this as with my old Wrangler, every time it coped a bit of moisture under the bonnet, the TPS would give up. Anywhere between 260-320 to replace. And I'm not talking drowning the car here either, just a splash really. Anyone had these dramas?

          Regards

          Brett

Re: Strange Issue with My V6 (ITS ALL FIXED!!!)

            Hi guys
Bought my 99 Prado about Amonth ago, great car to drive but I thought it would have a bit more power than what it has  , then I happen to come across this post so today I unplugged the afs. WOW what a difference , I'll be ordering a new afs tomorrow. If I drive around with the afs unplugged will I create any new problems or do any damage to the car.
            Have a great day.
            Big Al.

Re: Strange Issue with My V6 (ITS ALL FIXED!!!)

Out of interest I tried unplugging the MAF Left home and it ran about the same as with it plugged in, but once the engine got warm I couldnt even drive anymore. Didnt have enough power to even accelerate out of 1st gear and misfired badly. Plugged the MAF back in and it ran fine again. Have checked the fault codes and not got any errors (this was before unplugging the MAF).

              Any ideas???

Re: Strange Issue with My V6 (ITS ALL FIXED!!!)

Hi guys, noticed my 02 (140000km) Prado seemed to be under powered compared to my neighbors 2000 model. I am running new 75 series AT tyres and also have a roof rack which does make a difference, but go to Supercheap Autos and get a can of CRC Contact Cleaner ( they even make a product specific for air flow sensors ). Unplug sensor, unscrew two screws and remove sensor, spray sensor (looks like a wire with a brown dob of glue at the end) let dry for 10 min and re-install. This increased power straight away. I also unplugged the battery (suggested by local 4x4 shop) for 5 min to reset computer? Contact cleaner cost @ $30

                  Hey all
I have had a very similar problem with my car, the auto just seems to do what ever it wants when it is hot, just changes gears freely. I have a post in the transmission side trying to find out what it is. I cleaned out my tps switch, throttle position switch and also the air flow meter, with some awesome contact cleaner, and what do you know, it has so much more power in it towing my trailer, and uses less fuel, and also shits gears beautifully.
I am still waiting for it to do its crazy change gear thing on my, then i will change the tps switch over
I recommend anyone with a 5vz -fe motor up to about 200 000 to do the same, so much difference
                  cheers gav

Re: Strange Issue with My V6 (ITS ALL FIXED!!!)

                        Hi all
Been doing a lot of research about MAS for prado's. All the info contained above is very helpfull. I have a 2000 gxl, bought it second hand with 120,000klm on the clock. During the first 12months of owning it I was noticing loss in power and increase in consumption. Initially putting down to facts that i had added larger tyres, barwork, draws, ect. I installed a snorkel and UNI filter foam element, thinking this would help. It didn't. After consulting my workshop manual and checking MAS and TPS, both coming up within tolerances... But i was still loosing preformance. The car was surging and had flat spots while
accelerating and had no power between 2000 to 3000 rpm.
With160,000 klm I was getting very fustrated. Off i went to Mister Toyota. He informed me that MAS was about $400 and TPS $160. He also said that they carry MAS in stock but not TPS...? When i quizzed him about lifespan of MAS , he said there was a reason why they carried them in stock!!
Any way, I found out the MAS was the problem when I disconnected the MAS, wow it was suddenly a different car, all the missing power was back, if only it reved over 3000rpm like that. On closer inspection of the MAS the "hot Wire" elements within it were fowled and dirty. They are platinum and should be shiny and clean. Next it was off to REPCO for a can of CRC CO Contact cleaner. After carefully cleaning the hot wires and letting it dry put the whole thing back together.
What an awesome improvement! flat spots and shudders gone, motor now starts easier, does not over rev and is now a pleasure to drive.
So now every time I do a service, Out comes the MAS for a clean also. Now I can tell when it is dirty and needs a clean. A $30 presure pack of CO cleaner lives in the car, heaps cheaper than a new sensor if you dont need it.

                            What year vehicle?

Usually the MAS is just after the airbox/filter.

Ok, got some Contact Cleaner & cleaned what i think is the MAS, the plastic housing just after the air cleaner that feeds air to the motor.....The little wires & surrounding areas were a shade of grey, squirt of CRC Contact Cleaner, wait 20 minutes & put it back together..

Anything else i should give a squirt?

What about the air flow meter, & where is this located...

                                Many thanks
