After suffering with a problem for several years...I wanted to share the solution
Vehicle: year 2000 Prado 5 door with 5vz-fe 3.4 liter petrol engine, 5 speed manual transmission. 71,000 kms
Problem:
Cold...After a cold start and with the RPMs stable @1000+or-, if you floor the pedal, the engine backfires and the RPM drops to 600 or so before it will accelerate.
Normal Temperature: On flat smooth road, the engine at 2000 to 2500 RPM and in second gear...floor the pedal and the engine hesitates severally before accelerating.
When pulling out to pass and flooring the pedal...the truck will start to hesitate and then buck fore and aft sometimes so badly that you have to depress the clutch and re release it smoothly to get the car out of the bucking mentioned.
Repairs that did not help : Cleaned the injectors..no help. New spark plugs...no help. New cables for the left bank cylinders...no help. Air and Petrol filters..no help
Solution. Changed the Mass Air Flow Sensor..................perfection again! Like a new truck. All sense of hesitation gone!!
Hope these words can help some other lost soul out there.
