  • Vibration???

Took the prado (02 v6 auto) to have the exhaust checked and muffler replaced to get rid of the droaning vibration from 2700 rpm, only to find out there was nothing wrong with the exhaust. Went to the local Toyota dealer, and the forman took it for a drive. It's not drive line, becasue the vibration was there when reving the car in neutral. He suggested it may be harmonic balancer, engine mount or even torque converter. Apparently the Landcruisers developed similar problems, and they would remove the torque converter rotate it slightly from it orginal position and re-install it. This may take a few goes to get it right, but it cured the probelm.

I know the vibration is a common problem in the prado, but I drove my neighbours Prado (2000 V6 auto) and there was only a slight noise & vibration @ 2700rpm. Mine makes a droaning noise and vibrates right through the car.

    Anyone else has this problem?

    Re: Vibration???

I did, and it was my harmonic balancer (cost me $530 fitted).

Some things I'd suggest checking would be engine mounts, and there's a thing on the bottom of the gearbox called a dynamic vibration dampener, which just looks like a U shaped rubber block, and is easily damaged (I don't know for sure if auto's have the same thing, I've only looked at manuals)

    Hopefully it's something simple.

      Re: Vibration???

Thanks Taresk, had it checked out by Toyota. They tightened the engine and gear box mounts, and were fortunate to have another 2 95 series Prado's getting serviced at the same time. All 3 including mine have the same droning noise. At least they said it was in good nick for it's age. They also didn't charge me for the work they had done

        Re: Vibration???

Mine had some resonance from the front two mufflers, the ones just down under the back of the engine. The heat shields had corroded and were vibrating. I fixed this by attaching a couple of stainless hose clamps around the shields.
