  • Broken Alternator belt

Today i was driving home and my alternator belt snapped. Pulled over after thinking that it was powering the cooling pump too but thankfully the other fan belt was still powering that. Just wondering if this happens a lot to people and if its an expensive fix? Also is any other vital parts powered by that belt other than the alternator?

    Cheers

    Re: Broken Alternator belt

Hi Wassell. Had a similar mishap last year on my 2000 1KZ-TE Prado. One of the alternator belts flicked off (shortly after it's 150,000 km service) taking the other 2 drive belts with it. Right in the middle of the main street. Hell of a racket. I managed to roll the least damaged waterpump belt back on and idled around to a toyota dealer who (after hours) fitted a new set of belts for parts costs only - they also gave us a cuppa and the use of their washroom to clean up! (He was apologetic of the poor servicing of the other dealer on behalf of toyota) If you are in Hamilton - NZ use Waikato Toyota - the guys there are great. No further issues as a result of the near miss. Gotta love the toyoya backup.

Not sure if it powers any thing else my car not at work but cost would only be 10-15min labour and the cost of the belt if no damage was done to pulley's fan or radiator
