I have a Dec 1999 petrol/LPG Prado. After I fill up with petrol I find I end up having a small amount (cup full?) of petrol leak out of where the old main tank filler pipe was cut off. Not much you may say but enough to be a safety hazard. Dont want to go up in flames from someones smouldering cigarette butt or put up with the fumes in house from it leaking in the garage.
The main tank was removed when fitting the LPG tank. The pipe was sealed by a plastic cap and hose clamp by installer. I looked at someone elses recently and found theirs was done exactly the same and they were from interstate but they didnt have the petrol leak problem. I do know of others that had the same problem as me but not solved it. I only fill until the pump clicks off so its not an overfill issue. It happens after filling at different service stations so not linked to one servo. Didnt happen after LPG was first installed but has developed over last year to now always happen when filled or near filled. The leak is behind the left rear tyre. It doesnt happen immediately after you fill up, it happens after you drive. It makes me think fuel is going up the neck of filler pipe to my existing sub tank and then back down the old dis-used main filler pipe. If you look up under the car at this spot you can see the 2 fuel tank filler pipes and in my case where the pipe is cut off.
At Xmas I decided enough is enough when I could smell it leaking yet again. Simple enough job I thought so I bought some of the "knead it" type product for holes in petrol tanks etc and tried that. It just absorbed the fuel and allowed it to leak. I thought it was a faulty batch and removed it and bought another brand at another outlet/town. It also absorbed the petrol again allowing it to leak, and this time was leaking after driving around 150kms on petrol before I switched over to gas thinking this would stop my problem. I was wondering if there is an adhesive tape or bandage that will seal petrol if I wrap it over the plastic cap on the old filler pipe end? Or any other suggestions?
Some people have suggested that fuel automatically drains from either tank to the other as a fail safe mechanism built in by Toyota as suggested in this PP topic: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4082
But no one has proven this to be true and even if it was wouldnt that cease after a correctly done LPG installation? See here where I have asked about this without any luck also: http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/752 ... Prado.aspx
It details that fuel does NOT purposely leak from one tank to the other.
There must be more than me on PP with this problem. I am not happy with the solution being I only part fill the sub tank as that defeats the purpose of having the full capacity. Any help or advice appreciated - cheers
