  • Timing Belt - what else do I need to change at the same time

    Hi,

I have a 5vz engine, and I am going to change my timing belt. ... I know I need to change 2 cam seals - is it easy to change the crank seal shaft at the same time? I was going to change the water pump too. Is there anything else I should change?

    Thanks for any advice,

    Gio

    Hi Gio,

i have been in the automotive industry for 30 years and my suggestion is that if you have gone to all of the trouble to strip down the front of the motor to the degree to change the belt, i would do the seals and any tensioners etc at the same time. the water pump if not removed, maybe a job for later. like the old saying, if it's not broken dont fix it. but if you have to remove the item to do other work, then it's been disturbed.

if i had a dollar for every time i saw a mechanic change a belt and not change a seal beacuse "it was quicker not too", then i would have a couple of new 150 series in the garage

Hi Gio, I will be getting mine done in the next three months.

        Timing Belt
        Water Pump
        Top & Bottom Radiator Hose
3 x Belts (air con, power steering, alternator)

I'm changing the hoses as insurance because i'm putting on a new water pump, and the belts have to come off anyway. All this installed for @ $1100.

That price is a bit steep try shopping around , eg price the parts seperate then get a quote to fit and you supply parts .

Re: Timing Belt - what else do I need to change at the same time

Just bought spare hoses and belts for mine I got the following prices

            TOYOTA
Top and Bottom Hose around $30 each
3 Belts were all $40-50 each

            REPCO
Top and Bottom Hose nearly $40 each
Bought all 3 belts for around $110

I ended up getting hoses from toyota but belts from repco cause was pretty surprised when they were nearly $50 bucks each

Timing belt was around 150 from toyota I think.. believe that was without tensioner..better check that one out for yourself

Re: Timing Belt - what else do I need to change at the same time

I've just changed the Timing Belt on mine. Its almost on 300,000klms, and I had the Heads off due to a blown gasket. The seals are easy to do, so I would suggest doing both cam & cranks seals. The water pump is driven by the timing belt, so for the 15 mins extra labour to replace it now, rather than a couple of months down the track, and having to redo all the stuff to get to it. The only problem I had with mine was I couldnt get the bolts undone on the hydraulic tensioner to put it in a press, so I made a tool out of the old roller to press it in the car.
