How to know when u should change timing belt and how much is to much

  • #2
the manual stat every 150,000 ks there should also be a dash light that should light up when its dew.
if you have brought the car second hand and its is not written down anywhere (For me someone had put it in permanent marker on the inner guard when it was last changed) i would work it out were it should be dew based of 150,000 ks and do it that way.

    Hope this helps

As Shane said above, every 150,000km is spit on. If a mechanic or prev owner was thoughtful enough they may have applied a timing belt sticker high up on the firewall in the engine bay showing the kms and date of when it was last done because a timing belt kit should come with one of these stickers. If u have doubts about it being done when it should’ve and it’s likely past 150k, then just do it and change the water pump & thermostat at the same time. You thinking of doing the job yourself, having a mate do it or a mechanic?

I would consider changing the timing belt & water pump every 100,000km or less is too much & unnecessary unless you really like doing this kind or work yourself for experience, but it’s not the sort of job you’’d want to do yourself without any help more than twice in a couple of years. Some fast working people have done this job at home in a day. Took me two..... I lost time brainstorming a home made special service tool “SST” to loosen the crank bolt and I also had to modify a harmonic balancer removal kit I bought from S’’Cheap Auto to get it to fit the Prado crank pulley. Pay extra special careful attention if fitting a new water pump yourself when applying the FIPG sealant and placing the gasket on. Be just as careful when positioning the w’pump onto the engine block and tightening the bolts up on it in sequence and to the correct torque. You don’t want to bugger up the water pump job and find out the hard way when you’ve put everything back together and run the car.
