  • High Idle

    Hi guys,

I hope you can help me with this one. I have a TOYOTA Prado with a 3.4l 5VZ FE engine. The truck has 100.000 miles on it and about 6 months ago it started reving up quite high during cold starts. Most of the time the CE light would come on with code 33 (IAC).
Since then I replaced the IAC, the CE light doesn’t come on anymore however the idle speed is still high when the engine is cold (about 1800 RPM) and when it's hot (about 1050 RPM).
I have also replaced the cold start temperature sensor, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the TB and checked for vacuum leaks.
The weird thing is that there is a condition where the idle speed is right. That is when the engine gets completely warmed up and I turn it off for a couple of minutes, then when I start it back up again it revs nicely at 750 RPM. If I then start driving it will never come back down to that level.
Another weird thing I noticed (after changing the IAC) is that when the truck is moving while in neutral the idle speed is slightly higher than when the truck comes to a complete stop. It's like the ECU determines that the truck is moving and "orders" a slightly higher idle speed. I did not have this effect with my old IAC valve ……
I am now totally confused since I think I have no place else to look for a "cure". I hope you could advise.

    Cheers

Check your throttle step motor, could be a problem with it, you may have had the motor serviced recently and they have stuffed around with the idle speed also.

      Re: High Idle

Hi, I have the same problem with high Idle, but only does it on the main tank, also when running on the main tank the car realy drives well but still revs high when pull up, then if I switch to the sub tank it runs very slugish and feels like the engine is under-powered, which tells me that it could be a fuel pressure problem, also when im driving I've noticed the fuel guage goes up on the sub tank when useing the main tank, could it be the change over solenoid is not opening and closing properly and letting fuel run back into the other tank. any help on this would be appreciated.
      Cheers sully

Alot of owners have found their high idle comes from worn parts in the throttle body, especially the shaft that the butterfly opens on. Manipulate linkages and pull the shaft towards the front of car and see if idle drops. An old trick is to put a very thin washer on shaft (so re-centres butterfly) and it closes properly.
I tried everything to diagnose my high idle and nothing worker! However, I just got a new battery and had the old one out overnight. The next day the idle was normal. I figure the ecu 'self-corrected' and went back to standard settings after so long without power. (I previously disconnected battery for an hour or so- but it was not long enough).
I did nothing else at the time, so am preety sure that was the thing that fixed my high idle. After spending so long trying everything I am over the moon my problem 'self corrected' and it was by accident!!!

I have been searching for an answer to the high idle (around 1200 in drive) on my 1998 Prado, super annoying especially when you need to keep your foot on the brake to keep the car launching forward. Engine light was coming on intermittently. My initial steps where to clean the Mass air flow sensor (MAFS) with MAFS cleaner, with no luck. Then I cleaned the throttle body, still no luck. Then I realised I had a crack in the air intake hose (OEM:17881-62111) so I replaced that and at the same time cleaned the Idle air control valve, with still no luck.

Lastly I disconnected the battery over night, and amazingly my idle problem was fixed, why didn't I try that first .

Hope anyone else having this problem solves it faster then I did.
