  • High Fuel Consumption

I did a check today as I noticed the fuel guage seem to drop pretty quick for the amount of klms I had done. Worked out at 16.1L per 100k. Would it be fair to say that with the extremely cold weather we have had the last few mornings (so colder start ups) and the fact that I only do 9k to work and a whole heap of very short trips eg from home to Penrith shops (about 8k), doctors, hospital, doctors, etc would account for it ??? Normally its around 13.2 around town. Im putting it down to the colder mornings so would be pumping more fuel in till it warms up (this is noticable by it idling higher on start up when cold. The last time I replaced fuel and air filter was 20k ago. It is a 1kz 01 T/D prado. Makes me wonder these days with later model cars, old hilux use to be 10's day in day out, the old commodore VX 01 was 11.2 now the company VE commodore sits pretty well on 13.3 all the time. Maybe time to get into a D4D hilux or Dmax, Colorado, All under the 10L per hundred.Has any one else noticed their fuel up a bit ?? due to colder weather. Regards Steve M

I use to have V6 97 model vx grande and around town it would be 17.2 city, freeway was 12.2 that was with bullbar, 2 inch lift, running higher profile tyres A/T's, fridge etc in the back. Did a run to Wollongong on saturday night sitting on speed limits and got 11.1L per 100 but in my 01 T/D Grande, only difference running normal profile but again Bf's A/T's. I reckon its thirstier on the bloody sand then the petrol was. Not real happy with the economy at all since I bought it. Best I have got so far is 10.2 freeway, my mate gets 11.2 freeway in his 06 petrol VX with a shit load more grunt. Will give it another try over the next couple of weeks if it doesnt change Ill go back to petrol 120 series.Seriously looking at Dmax, Colorado, hilux's not worth the extra you pay just to have a toyota badge on the front. Re: High Fuel Consumption

I know how you feel steve.

My wifies 120 petrol is magical on fuel and not to mention so much of a better car. Smoother, faster, powerful etc.
I baby my 2001 VX. I drive light but best I can get is 14.8 around the suburbs. I changed all filters.
No O2 sensor so cant change that. I have cleaned the AFM too. I wonder if I replace it with a new item it will get a tad better?

My wife gets around 13.5 around the suburbs.

Im constantly obsessing about the fuel consumption too. Thinking of a softroader but i know as soon as I go on Stockton I want a real 4wd.
I cant afford a turbo diesel.

          Re: High Fuel Consumption

We have 1999 3.4L petrol. Around town, 14.5 litres/100km day in day out. Towing (very big) boat around town, 17 to 19 l/100k, depending on how much non-towing. Country, 11.5 to 12 litres without camping gear, 13.5 with gear.

If you get higher than 15 l/100k non-towing, I would question how the car is driven more than the conditon of the Prado itself.

I sometimes wonder what the fuel consumption is of some Prado owners when I see them "drag" off from the lights. Must have more money to waste than we do.

            Re: High Fuel Consumption

Hi Michael, I dont sit their warming it up once started but I do only idle away and fairly easy on the throttle till I see the temp guage move a tad, I dont like to flog it or accelerate hard till it warms up, I pretty much crawl around sort of not over 40k till it warms a tad by then I have come too the main road which requires a bit of right foot to blend with the flowing traffic. I have been told this is better for the turbo till it warms a bit ?? I change oil filter and oil every 5k without fail. I'm pretty sure its due to the excess start stopping I have done the last week, running wife to doctors (5k away) then to Penrith 8k from home then back to doctors with results and things, then to local shops, back home, pick up 2 year old from daycare everything with in 10k radius. I dont rev it over roughly 2500 when driving around the suburbs and will only rev it to 3200 when cruising up Mooney Mooney or Hawsbury to hold 110 with over drive out, Im usually the last to leave the lights especially if Im at the line first incase some one running the red the other way, hardly flogging it ?? I am going to run this tank empty change fuel filter and have bought some of that stuff you put in the tank 1ml to 1 litre to supposidly remove any crap etc from the system ?? Probably a waste of money but will see, then will refill both tanks chockers and see how it goes then..Regards Steve M

              Steve,

I have noticed similar consumption with my 02TD GXL. I drive in much the same manner as your last post and as much as possible let the torque of the diesel push it around rather than rev the shit out of it. Pushing around a 2.5t car with a 3.0L Diesel around town, stop-start driving will do that I guess. On a long run I see a noticable improvement.
Regarding your remarks about the Hilux/Colorado, just be careful cos I hear some bad stories about actual fuel consumption vs manufacturers quoted details.... :?
Your situation is probably different to mine but there is no way I could justify trading up to a new(er) vehicle just to offset fuel consumption. $20,000+ buys a lot of fuel Also love my old girl too much and done too many mods to get rid of it My opinion anyway.

                Re: High Fuel Consumption

That consumption for a Prado diesel sounds a lot. I use around 15/100km in my 1999 petrol/auto aroudn town with a cargo barrier and 5 peices of ply for shelving. Its well known that stop starts are not the best for achieving good consumption, petrol or diesel, for the reasons you outlined.

The cold you mentioned, is all relative, but it ain't that bad in Sydney especially for a well engineered engine etc...but the stop start is the issue I reckon.

Having said that, maybe there is something about fuel filter/injectors etc for diesels. I don't know but its all part of the fuel system. Electronics are the next item....here's your chance for a beewudiful chip!...and why not add a more beewudiful exhaust. Cheaper than a Holden or Isuzu (surely you wouldn't!!!!...a dual cab Holden over your Prado!!!.....). :?

But 16lt/100km is a lot and at a higher price per litre is now costing you over a petrol version.

Let us know if you discover any gremlins.

                  Re: High Fuel Consumption

Only just noticed that you have turbo diesel. I had assumed that because this post is in the Engine - Petrol (90 series) forum you had a petrol engine. That makes my comments even more pointed. I never, ever accelerate hard, unless it is the only way to get into a traffic stream or I am towing the boat and going up a big hill. Treat the accelerator pedal as if there is an egg under it. On the highway, we sit at a maximum of 100 km/h as I know that at 110 km/h the fuel consumption goes skywards. I am constantly amazed by the poor fuel economy claimed by some people I know. Then, I travel in their vehicle and I can see why. Take it easy and you will save a fortune.

I have just done three consumption tests and all came in at 14l/100km around town no towing with alloy bull bar and rola roof racks - time for a service as I use to get 12.5 - 13 ltrs / 100km

                        Re: High Fuel Consumption

It's those very short trips you are doing. By the time the engine warms up proper, you are at your destination. Then the engine cools down. Then you get back in and drive it another short distance - engine warms up, then cools down. It'll be fine once you get back to your normal routine.

Just filled mine up after going through the first tank since I got it a month ago (98 Grande petrol auto) . 14.6L / 100kms. Not too bad considering I did a lot of them kms with the car filled and a large trailer filled shifting a houseload of furniture, and also did a couple of runs on Blacksmiths beach. Getting it fully serviced this week, so hopefully see a little improvement there too.

I have high power consumption issue too.

I am sorry if my story does not fit this topic. But it seems that my question is the same with this one.

I am using Prado RV6 1997 3.4L petrol. the Kms is now 254k kms. It seems it is quite high, but the car looks great and works great also. Services done regularly.

I never have any small issue since I bought it 5 months ago. It starts and works anytime I need it.

The fuel consumption is about 400-430km for the main tank, and 330km for the subtank with full fuel inside. I tried to measure like that until I got only about 7liters of fuel inside each tank. That's for almost freeway.

With only local driving, the fuel consumption will be down to about 375km for the main tank, and 300km for the subtank.

So, it seems that my car drinks more fuel that it should be. I usually feel the petrol smell from the exhaust pipe whenever I turn on the engine. Although I haven't notice any evidence of black smoke from exhaust pipe.

Is that normal or not with my car?

Can you bros tell me what is the issue with my car? and how to fix the issue to get better fuel consumption?

                              Thanks so much
