    Hi guys
    I need a little bit of help to try and sort out a problem I have, The problem is when I do a cold start, the engine wont idle unless I rest my foot on the accellerator for about 2 seconds, then it is fine but the idle is a little slow, about 150rpm under what it use to be, but when the engine is at operating temp the idle is fast around 1500 rpm (in park or N) and 150 rpm faster than normal in drive, and the fuel consumption is excessive (around 18lts / 100k), just wondering if anybody would have an idea of what the cause would be. It is like a choke is working in reverse if you get what I mean.

    I think it could be your spark plugs, cause my car would run crap and not like to idle every now and again and its because i used ethenol fuel for a little bit.
    It made my car chew up fuel like there was no tomorrow and it burns your spark plugs out in only a few thousand k's
    that was my problem so i hope this helps

      I'm am not sure exactly as I have only owned my car a short time. Maybe it could be a vacuum problem if the choke is vacuum operated. Some times if your batterie is on the way out and doesnt have enough volts the ecu can start doing funny things like that too. Id be interested to see what you find

        Spark plugs are fairly new, I even got some special Iridium ones that have the quad electrodes, which cost a fortune, not the std twin ones, but I will check again, the motor will idle fine, I only need to use the slightest pressure on the loud peddle to get it to start first time in the morning or when I finish work, It is just like a choke is working in reverse, there are no air leaks on vaccum either, I have narrowed it down to 3 possible causes, Air flow meter, throttle position switch or throttle step motor, unless anyone else has had this problem and it was caused by something else, It is just that I don't want to be spending big money chasing a problem and changing parts that don't need to be changed. There are no fault codes either, but I am thinking about getting it checked again.

          Double check all your vaccum lines for leak! Double check your intake pipe is not crack or loosely sitting off the throttle body.
          Im not sure if Toyotas have Idle Stepper Motors. If so that needs to be checked or cleaned.

            The Oxygen sensor on these motors is a common issue causing excessive fuel consumption, do a search & see if any symptoms line up with what your getting.
