  • What engine oil?

    Hey guys..

The time has come for me to do the first service on my Prado and I'd like to get some opinions on what engine oil to use (and why)

I've always been a Helix fan but I really would like to know your thoughts.

    It's a 3.4V6, manual with 150,000K's on it.

    Cheers
    Craig.

    Re: What engine oil?

I've always used Helix full synth in mine, used it in my old 4Runner too, it seems to handle the torture I dish out (cold starts, short runs, high revs, etc).

I use castrol magnatec 10w40.Wth over 330,oooklm still going strong.I always change my oil filter and oil at 5000klm intervals, yes it seems excessive these days but it is a cheap garantee.

I use AC Delco 10w 30 (Holden Oil) it's Fuch's oil , also do my oil changes every 5000 klm with a new oil filter each time.

Just started using Magnatec 10w 40 in mine too. Cheap oil, and good quality.

Oil and filter will get changed every 5000k.

Only at 106000 now, so hopefully will help her do another couple of hundred!

              Re: What engine oil?

doesn't castrol magnatec have a history of going "sticky" and not lubricating properly?

                  Re: What engine oil?

I used to religiously use Castrol Magnatec but now use Penrite 10W-50. I like the fact it has the extra 10 viscosity rating when running at operating temperature. I was also told by a mechanic, which was my reason for the change, that Castrol Magnatec is fantastic for new engines, but not the best choice for wearing engines. He said for a 6 cylinder that's done over 200,000km I should be using an oil that's slightly thicker at running temp. I don't know how much truth is in it to be honest, but it was a white elephant for me so I made the change. I have no complaints and economy is good. My car doesn't use a drop of oil between the 7,500km and 10,000km of driving between oil changes.

                    Re: What engine oil?

I would be abit hesitant in using magnatec . Whats in it that makes it keep the parts coated when not running . surely thats got to gum up your engine ? . Add excessive resistance? . I too am about to service my 95 series for my first time and am wondering what to use, Also how many litres do they hold ?
