  • Viscous Fan To Thermo Change

    Hi there. Just wondering if anyone has done this conversion cause something interesting happened to me. I got a new viscous fan clutch cause mine was rooted and it wasn't working properly and eventually the engine got hot and i had to pull over.
    But before this my car felt so responsive and perky, like a brand new car. The fuel comsumption was way down, at the time i was pulling a trailer and i usually get about 310kms to half a tank with my builders trailer on, on this day i was up around the 380km mark or so and the engine would rev so free.
    Just wondering how people think of a thermo fan being dunked in the water all the time cause there is one on the air con condenser.
    I was going to put a override switch in for water crosssings so i can swith it off manually

    All I can say is that you would need a very big electric fan to match the airflow thats capable from the Viscous fan......that fan after all is connected straight to a 96kw motor!

    I don't see the need to change it either.....if is running properly it provides no load on the engine when its cold or warm...only when its hot can you hear it acting & also you can feel it through the throttle too...

    For me this only happens when slowing from 100km to turn up a side street on very hot summer days....when accelerating up the street you can hear the fan & feel the lack of power, but a short time later the fan cuts out because the temperature would drop.

    It should not be operating at highway speeds either even on moderate hill climbs....it shouldn't effect your fuel consumption at all...

    My biggest concern is these motors don't like overheating & can cause damage, are you sure that there was no damage after the initial overheating? Does it use water?

      It says there that you run with a diesel motor. cause it does use a bit of power on the petrol. Yeah i had the engine all pressure checked after the overheating and it was fine. But i did blow a radiator on the weekend and that was from the overheating months ago but all is running well now. I have noticed but now that i had everything out i was able to blow the air con condensor out with a air gun and there was so much dirt and grass it it, i had tried to clean it out before but must not have been enough. Now that the new radiator is in and it is all clean under there the fan doesn't kick in half as much anymore its great
