  • 1UZ Conversion

I am looking to do a 1UZ-FE in my 4Runner but now wondering if it might be better in the Prado and putting the 5VZ-FE in the 4Runner. Both the Prado and 4Runner are a bit underpowered and I could kill two birds with one stone by doing this conversion.

I have searched this site and googled 95 Prado 1UZ and not much comes up, there must be someone who has done it before??? I have looked at Marks Adapters and there is nothing on their site either, any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Re: 1UZ Conversion

Is the chassis dimensions in the 90 series prado any different to the KZN185 and the VZN185 surfs?
From memory they are the same chassis, driveline, suspension setup anyway.
Also look at dellows automotive, their stuff is a little bit higher quality.
If you are on www.toyotasurf.asn.au one of the guys on there is very knowledgable about these things, 4thsurf is the man.

Yeah as far as I know they are the same. I am a member of toyotasurf, have my 4Runner on there and have also put the same question on there as well hoping that Simon will see it!! I will give him a call if he doesnt and pick his brain.

He is a Kiwi and I have heard of some Kiwi guys going the conversion so he might have some knowledge of them.

Had a look at Dellows and their catalogue is just a PDF form, couldnt see anything on their, might just have to keep putting google through its paces!

Yeah Simon used to work on my surf when I had it.
So I spent a bit of time around his place, seeing his work. the auto one he did was a fantastic finished job.
I have half the conversion gear for a manual 1uz transplant from him. never got around to it though.

          Re: 1UZ Conversion

Have tried to convince him to move to QLD with no success!

I am not 100% I am going to keep my 4Runner, might sell it and buy the wife a new car and take over steering duties of the Prado so I thought I should just do the mods I want to the Prado, Im caught between two lovers!! I love my 4Runner, I have really only just got it back on the road after a major make over and havent had it off road yet, it will be my weekend weapon and daily driver.

The Prado I am setting up as a tourer and I know the 1UZ is quite economical as well. The idea of a V8 note coming from the Prado is very apealing.....

Not sure if this is the same Kiwi but this bloke claims to sell kits in NZ. Found this link in the Lextreme forum.

Keep us posted if you do it. Would love twin pipes hangin out the back of mine!

Edit: sorry the link doesn't go direct to the page with the info but if you just search "1UZ Prado" in their search engine you will get there. Blokes username is Gloverman.

From what I beleive, the Prado has the same gearbox as the Landcruiser 80 and 100 series, so the kit for one of them from Marks Adaptors should be the way to go, you will have to modify the engine mounts, (cut off and reweld).

I also want to do this conversion, so I am very interested to see what you find.

BTW - is the Maritz in your nick from your surname - South African by any chance?

Prado has a different gearbox to the Surf (it's a constant 4WD, no 2wd/4wd option) and it's nothing like the bigger landcruisers
Also the front end is different (coils not torsion bar) setup so the rails are lower at the firewall but I think the space between the frame rails is simliar
I am also keen, the only think I can think of is the engine bay is a little short on length but still looks possible

Or if you really like the sound of a V8, you could just buy a UZJ100 series: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/toyota-landcruiser-1998-13359298 and perhaps fit a twin exhaust.

Or maybe a Hilux Surf with the 1UZ conversion already done, engineered and supercharged: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-1992-13383933

another one here, but not engineered: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-1995-13344547

Replace the diffs with Eatons, do the uni joints and the box. Now that's a conversion in my opinion, and what a rig. Or you could just buy this and fit it out : Well sorry but it's gone. It was a HDJ80 with only 149,000 kms on it that some old guy had and he had died. I thought it would sell over the weekend and it did.
