20L Premium/100km for RV 97 3.4 manual - Is this normal?

    20L Premium/100km for RV 97 3.4 manual - Is this normal?

    Hi bros,

    After changing all new oil (20-50W Toyota Genuine oil), expensive oil filter ($16 rather than $4.5), air filter (not K&N, they don't sell this kind of air filter here in my area, so I had to buy a new one with only $20 - I am not sure it is good enough or not, but it is brand new one from a high reputation Auto shop), I decide to change from Unleaded Petrol to Premium 95.

    I have exactly 20L/100km with those conditions:

    - Extreme high density local traffic. Almost stop and start within some hundreds of meters.
    - Only one driver on the car.
    - One steel roof rack which I think it is about 50kg, but it should affect the car's performance as the wind will blow on it hard, I can hear the wind's noise from the roof rack.
    - Change gear at 2000 rpm.

    I am wondering, is this NORMAL or NOT for my RV 1997 3.4 manual? Do I need to change anything else to get better fuel consumption?

    I did expect it should be a little better.

    However, this is just first measurement on only 20L after changing all new things with Premium petrol.

    NEW UPDATE 07/11/2010:

    - after changing oil + oil filter + air filter + all spark plugs + about 3 weeks using A95, yesterday, I found a good petrol station near my house that sells Ultimate A98. So, I decide to fill up both tanks and see what will happen.

    RESULTS:

    - 114km local driving (20 km freeway + 94km local).
    - 40km using air conditioner at 1st level.
    - tyres: 38/40psi. Still using 265/70/R16.

    I just fill it up again and the total used fuel is: 17.54L/114km => 15.38L/100km.

    Absolutely, I can not feel happier now. :mrgreen:

    the roof rack will effect fuel economy, when i take my rhino rack off my diesel 120 i get another 150km per tank, but 20l/100 seems a tad thirsty, what profile tyres are you running, 75 series?. cheers samo
    had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

      20w-50 oil is a pretty thick oil to run, wouldn`t help. Does seem high though, would have thought something like 14-16 per 100km over a tank full would be about right, depending on mix of town and hwy.

      Do all the obvious, some you have already covered -- sparkplugs, tyre pressure, air filter, what profile tyres?
      May need a look at by a Toyota dealer.
      stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
      but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

        It will take about 5 -6 tanks of premium before a difference will be noticed.

          Yeh! 20 ltr's- 100 k's is pretty high, It should be more like 14-16 ltr's- 100. I have 32" bfg mudy's and a roof top tent on mine and get 14-16 out of it.
          Maybe try some new plugs in it, I went to "Bochse platinum" they seem to be a better plug for the 3.4 V6 and are quite a bit cheeper than the Champion plugs.Wile your at it try cleening the MAS air flow senser with some MAFS cleener, this sould at the verry least help.

            I've only had mine for a couple of weeks but 20l/100km is higher than what ive seen .
            Also 20-50W rated oil is too think for this engine in my opinion . Change the oil , check your tyre pressures and take off the roof rack if your not using it regularly .

              I wouldn't worry... I get between 20-22L in the following conditions:

              - Avg speed of 50kmh
              - Mud tyres
              - Roof racks
              - Extra weight (bullbar, winch, approx 100kg of tools)

                Clean your MAS sensor and get a thinner oil. Just for your reference, I filled up on Saturday, and had to put 20 ltrs in the sub tank, and on that 20 ltrs I drove 175km, in combined city/highway (but mostly city).
                97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

                  I just forgot to tell some thing:

                  - Tyres are 265/70/16.
                  - Tyres' pressure are 38/40 psi for front/rear tires
                  - MAS sensor was cleaned before I measure this consumption.

                  Absolutely I asked the seller about the oil and I said I want the 10-30W or 5-40W for my car, but that old man try to convince me that the 20-50W is THE BEST for my car. I even told him that my friends recommend that for me, but he made warranty that the 20-50W is THE BEST again. Finally, I was convinced to buy that one because I saw it was Toyota Genuine oil. :evil:

                  Do you talk about spark plugs? Beside those ones, do you recommend another? ( I am scaring that the shop near my area does not sell this one with good brand).

                      I will keep this name for next time, because this afternoon I just bought and change all 6 new spark plugs from the shop near my house. It is made in Japan.

                      I found that my old spark plugs are at really bad condition. So now just wait to see what will happen with the car after all new spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil were changed.

                        We have roof racks on car 100% of the time, most driving is around town except for camping trips and we get about 14.5 l/100 km. Even towing our 2.5 tonne boat, we get under 20 l/100 km. We have just come back from a trip to Port Stephens, almost 600 km, right across Sydney twice at peak times, freeway speeds with the Shippshape on top and lots of dive gear, averaged a bit under 15 l/100 km I reckon. We only use normal unleaded, at least till it totally disappears in Sydney.

                        How hard do you put your foot down? Even if you are changing up at 2000 rpm, you can still use petrol quickly if you accelerate hard.

                        I see people in Prados accelerate away from me at the lights and I think how much they mst be paying for fuel.

                          I will re-calculate my fuel consumption, because it seems that the car now is running better than what I thought. :mrgreen:

                            Being a toyota the computer takes too long for changes like timming adjustment some people say it can take up to 5000 kms for this to change. 2 things you could do keep useing the 95 octane and put up with the slow change or go back to 91 but stick it out it is worth the out come.
