5VZ ECU self learns quite well, especially latter models which had the TRD kit optioned.

You can speed up the ECU's self learn process by resetting it, You can either do this with the OBD tool or disconnect the battery overnight with headlights on. You then want to reconnect and start the engine in neutral without touching the throttle, allow the engine to idle till it reaches operating temp then shut it down. The ECU should now adjust for the higher octane fuel.

Hmmm old thread poped up again.... But anyways!
      Thats all myth.
Months ago I was talking to a Toyota Engineer, and I mentioned this, he said NO NO NO NO NO, the ECU can not learn, or know what fuel octane your using.

The ECU not "learning" makes sense as I believe the knock sensors only become "active" above 3000 rpm.
Hence the normal timing advance/retard will only occur above that rpm point irrespective of octane rating.

I'd teach my ECU to make me breakfast in the morning if it could learn.
