Hoping some one can help my 1998 5VZ man is flashing up a 99 code, dose anyone know what this code is ?
or has a list of DTC 's

It just decided not to fire up its got fuel pressure but no spark

    Re: 5VZ no spark

5050 it could be several things but obvious first.

Have you checked the ignition fuse in the interior fuse box ?
Also check the EFI relay and fusible link AM2 located in the engine bay.

The code list I have doesn't list a code 99. Have you put the system into diagnostic mode to read the code or is the check engine light just flashing on its own?
If its just flashing when you put your key in the ignition without bridging the terminals in the diagnostic connector then I think its a faulty key or an engine mobiliser fault.

    Good Luck,

      Thanks for the reply Leethal

all power is in tact - and power to the igniter and the coils - I know the negitive is switched to the coils

I thought it might be the igniter and got a SH one from the wreckers for $44 but no go'
there is a chance I got a dud one, I hoping to find someone with the same vehicle close by that I could try my igniter in

I got the DTC to flash out 99 in diagnostic mode

This will either guide you in the right direction or lead you completely astray ,

.... For the 120 Prado, codes in the 90's are generally for the immobiliser. 99 is; "no immobiliser to ECU signal"

            ahh huh thanks mick

99 = no immobiliser to ECU signal

this one's an 90 RV World Cup it didn't come with remote central lock
maybe all like this model will flash the 99 code ??

I'm going to play with it again tonight

              Re: 5VZ no spark

              Mal,
The immobiliser is not connected to the Remote Central locking.
The Immobiliser "reads" the ignition key, if you have a second key give it a try as your "main" key may have failed.
As far as I know the early models had an immobiliser key reader the same as the later models.

                  Re: 5VZ no spark

                  Hi Mal,

Are you sure about that as my keys have no visible electrics etc no battery to change just a plain solid plastic end.
According to the my manual the two black ones are master transponder keys, with the solo grey one not capable of opening the glove box for security :?

                  Lee

Edit; I searched in LCOOL and someone there had a similar problem, Code 99 on a 1996 model Prado, fault with Engine Immobiliser or wiring between Immobiliser and Engine ECU.
Fault in that case was the key and the Immobiliser ECU was mounted in the center dash below/behind the heater controls.
                  Hope this helps

You might want to check out this thread. It should clear up any uncertainty about the immobilizer .

                      Re: 5VZ no spark

I had an immobiliser problem a few years back, and I had to change the immobiliser control box, this is a Toyota only part, and will cost about $1000, you will have to search some Toyota dealers as not all of them believe the part is still made, but under Australian law the manufacturer must make that part for at least 10 years after last manufacture of that model vehicle, so you have got another 2 years before they stop making that part.

The other option is check out some vehicle security companies and see if they can repair or modify the existing control box.

Hopefully you have more than one key so can try others and its just a key failure not a Immobiliser failure.

                          Good luck !

Hi, my 98 5VZ 185000km has run like clockwork - until yesterday! First sign of trouble was engine stalled as I stopped at lights. restarted easily. This continued happening all day with increasing frequency. Got it home and found that if revs fell below 900-1000 the motor stopped as if turned off, and sometimes would start and stop several times before stopping completely. Set throttle stop so that idle was at 1000 rpm, seemed to work ok for 30 mins or so then stopped again and refused to start. Towed it home. Tried it this morning-turns over but no fire! Have tried both keys and does not appear to have registered any fault codes. HELP please. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Thanks, Smithyuno.
