Help! not starting

hey guys,

i have a 3.6 v6 rv, all of a sudden its not starting, half the time when i turn the key it does absoulutle nothig, the other times there is just a high speed ticking noise, would this be starter motor?

its done about 265000kms only had it for about 7 months, and most of the log book isnt filled in, so i have no idea about its history, or how it was treated

did an oil and plug change about 3000kms ago

I believe the ticking is the starter motor, but could be a loose terminal on the battery, if sometimes you get nothing...

I've had a simillar occurance on other vehicles and it has been the result of the battery being flat. The starter motor gives quick tick tick sound. Test the battery to see how much charge you have. If it is then check if the battery is stuffed, is the alternator charging, etc...

Haven't been through any water crossings lately have you? Mine does this after the water clogs up the bushes in the starter motor.. will start once dry, but takes a couple of days to clear fully

not, havent done any water crossings in her yet, did go out a couple of days ago, but was bone dry where we went

I have had this happen on the very rare occasion where I turn the key and nothing happens. I turn it back to off and turn the key again and it starts. I have been advised that it can be an indication that the starter motor is on the way out. I have had the alternator replaced and the battery tested (still in good order) but it still occurs on the rare occasion.

I'd say get your battery tested, it's the cheapest and most likely fault.

hey, cheers for the advice, its all sorted now, i checked the alternator and all other possibilitys just to be sure im not spending money i didnt need to, turns out it was the battery not holding a charge. got a new one in and had no worries since. looks like the last owner sciped and put a smaller than recommended battery in it, and removed the battery tray :? will have to get a new tray for it soon.

invest in a 2nd battery (around $190 for a 110 Ah) with an automatic isolator ($75 from Ebay), you will be more than happy.

also, install a battery checker with LCD + dual thermometer + time display: $15 off Ebay, working like a champ. Then you can keep an eye on both batteries.
