  • Stock Exhaust upgrade for a louder one!

    Hi folk,
I've been thinking heaps about getting a louder exhaust, i was thinking just a strait through pipe as i cant afford to spend $1500 on a whole system.
Has anyone put a strait through on there 90 or know of anyone? i want it to be load and mean. but legal of course.

    cheers AB

    Won't be legal straight through.
Standard has 2 mufflers, so just take one out.
If you got a 2.5" mandrel bent one made up, couple it with a high flow cat and muffler, you'll get louder, more performance and better economy.
I'm possibly doing this tax time, couple with Pacemaker extractors. It's that or sliders/scrub bars... decisions!

I heard mixed opinions about performance exhausts on these engines re: the power/economy gains.

Being a low revving torquy donk (as petrols go) I don't think the exhaust is a big player unless you like keeping the tacho above 3000rmp and I know I don't.

That's not to say low revving diesels won't see gains. Being higher compression, they have to push way more gas through the headers than the same sized petrol engine at low rpm.

But if you just want a louder exhaust, none of what I've said matters

if you are after a louder exhaust and yet performance, try http://supertrapp.com/, i had them before on my jeep, with borla headers and without the catylec convertor and yes they are loud, don't know if it would be leagle at your end.

Get a High Flow catalytic converter and a new muffler and youre set!

Hi Lugueto. A standard petrol powered engine generally needs a certain element of back pressure in the exhaust system. If you drop off the system behind the front pipe, the performance goes to the dogs. You may notice an increase in low down torque waaay down in the revs but the engine will be dead flat mid to high rev range. It sometimes improves performance if you knock the innards out of the cat converter and reduce to one good sized muffler though. Now turbo-diesels are a whole 'nuther ball game. Throw away the mufflers totally and fit a suitable diameter pipe front to back of car and wow! (children don't try this at home please). Only good for the track. Cheers.

Most people here just remove the cat and get a flowmaster/magnaflow/borla, etc muffler, just for the loudness of it. I personally think its idiotic as theyre polluting a ton more and theres virtually no performance gain... but they do get pretty loud!

I hope one day we get an emmisions control law or something....

                  Umm, don't forget that a '97 won't have a cat!
