  • Steering rack

    Goodday,
My name is Cobus and I'm from South Africa. I purchased a 95 series last year and sofar only had problems with it. After redoing the engine, gearbox, powersteering pump and dieselpump, another problem appeared... the steering rack. I had the steering rack reconditioned without the company informing me that the rack is actually stuffed even though they "reconditioned" it. Just out of a 3month warranty the rack and powersteering pump packed up. I opened it myself and saw the problem... the the rack is so badly damaged that it causes the seals to go. I replace the rack and the seals. Now I can see another culprit is the pinion shaft and sleeve (Toyota partnr:44201). I have been trying now nearly for 2months to get this part 44201 from Toyota and every day they give me another date. This is all due to the disaster that happened in Japan. And that's causing a lot of South Africans not getting their parts from Toyota. The 2nd hand steering racks I had a look at is in a worse condition then the one I have.

Toyota dealer gave me a new date of 11/07/2011 that they might deliver this part for me. I'm sorry I cant wait so long anymore.

This is where I need your guys help. Can anyone please see if they can find this part 44201 for me in their country and inform me so that I can see how much it will cost me to import it to South Africa. Any help will really be appreciated.

    Thank you
    Cobus de Jager

Hey Cobus, just an idea, have you tried a search on the web for wreckers, either in your country or another country that drives on the same side of the road as you, you may find they have a rack that is in good condition, and may be happy to freight it to you after payment.

Thats an expensive part, it looks like the assembly 44201-60010 is over 760 euro!
You can buy an exchange rack from Milners for only 350 stg.

          Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. Images I don't have at the moment, but I can take same this afternoon. And this part is expensive, R4000 (+/- USD$571). I was quoted R17230 (+/- USD$2461) for a new rack. So at the moment just to fix it is the best option for me so far.

There aren't to many of these 95 series that are not running anymore or wrecked here in RSA. They are very relaible, except the one I bought. But that was because of the previous owner. Once I have it fixed I know I will be happy and then enjoy the vehicle 100%.

While it's standing I have started building my own bullbar. I will add some images later. I also want to build my own roofrack and drawer system.

          Thanks for the help.

          Cheers

Hi Bounder, yes thanks. They just need my chassis number to check if they have the correct rack for me. Hopefully by tomorrow I will know how much it will cost me.

I have also found a company in Australia called Ultimate power steering. Have any of you guys maybe bought a steering rack from them? I would like to know what the quality is like of this steering rack http://www.ultimatepowersteering.com...rado-496-1202/

Yes thanks, I did make contact with them. They don't ship to South Africa, but I'm busy with a courier service to quote me for pickup and delivery.

                            Hi all
This is my first post and I have a question. My steering rack has about 20mm of movement and the car has only done 164000 km (I have done 35000 of them).
I am wondering how many people have had to change their steering rack and at how many km? I thought I would get more km then what I have.

What do you mean by 20mm movement, where is this movement.
If it is in the turning of the steering wheel, this is normal, it is called steering free play, every vehicle should have this, it is just when it becomes excessive (more than 80mm) that you need to have it looked at.
