How to remove latch inside tailgate?

I'm doing some rear wiring and need to take the inside trim off tailgate. Despite taking the Phillips screw out, I can't for the life if me get the latch out. Any tips how to remove/dislodge it?

Help - my rear camera and lights are gathering dust!

Hi Cam,
You are almost there after the Phillips head screw is out just lever the end where the latch opens with a screw driver
it will pop out, you then need to lever off the top vinyl piece as it comes down over the bottom piece.
Then once you lever all the press in clips around the surrounding edge of the tailgate vinyl trim just
turn the plastic of the latch sideways to fit through the hole of trim to remove the trim and the latch will dangle there.
Easy once you have done it.

Thanks Ron, will attack it this weekend. Clearly I needed to use a "persuader"!

After removing the screw in the rear inside latch and popping the trim clips for the surrounding panel, slide it to one side (probably to the passenger side from memory) and it then comes out. If you try and 'persuade' it to come straight out you'll probably damage it.
As Ron H said its easier once youve done it. There are other posts on here about installing a rear camera in a 95 series although it might be harder to find these days with the new forum (maybe google might find it for you more quickly!).

Hmm. OK, looks like it's start gentle and work my way up. Last time I tried was just trying to ease it out by hand, so will see how the slide-to-side goes before getting firm with it...

There's a maintenance manual buried in the back somewhere, might have to try the " if all else fails...." approach while I'm at it. Will advise outcome :-)

oh and I'm assuming you've removed the covers from the pull handle and the screws in them too (just above the latch). Looking at my gregorys manual again, after removing the interior handle screw move the handle assembly to the left and partially away from the tailgate. Disconnect the control rods.

I found with the plastic sealing sheet that if you have a sharp knife to cut away the black sealant from the door (only remove as much as you need to put the camera cables through) and once you've finished with your camera install you can then reuse the sheet with the existing sealant.
