  • What's it worth

I am coming to a cross-roads and I need to decide whether to sell my Prado or not. A big factor is how much I can get for it.
The big thing that I know will limit its resale is the fact that it's been modified. Trading it in will get me nothing useful ($7-8k), so I'd rather try and sell it privately, but I'm not sure how much to put on it. Most of the ones in Carsales etc are stock.
It's a 1997 VX Grande with luxury options pack (leather, sunroof etc).
    Automatic,
    295,000km
    2inch lift,
265x75x16 Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib (inc spare) all have 17mm tread
    rear Eaton Harrop e-locker,
    Heavy duty rock-slides/steps,
    UHF,
    HID spots,
    Windows tinted,
    rear cargo barrier
Will be selling with 12mths rego
It has been regularly serviced, and the last 3 years I've had it, every 5,000km.
It has been used off-road (as it should be), but not abused.

Looking at redbook it is worth between $9,200 and $11,700.
Carsales shows a bit less for something similar but basically stock.
I know you don't get your money back on mods, but if someone is looking for a capable vehicle with some of the mods already done, then they might pay a bit more.

    What would you pay ??

Mmm post a pic of your Grande, help a lot!

It seems you have very good mods on your 95.

The buyer of your Prado, should take the benefits of the mods and pay more for it.

Between $9,200 and $11,700 with mods? Standart?

That price would be standard. Redbook is a car valuation guide, so it's based on current market values taking all things into consideration except modifications.

Forget about the values in red book and the other ones, they are not what the true value of the vehicle is, you need to add in what you paid for the mods (then divide it by a pro rata rate), the condition the vehicle is in, ect, then you would come up with the true value of the vehicle. And going by what you have said I would be putting about 15K on it as a minimum.
If you trade the vehicle in the dealer does not want to know about the accessories of mods done to the vehicle, they are worthless to him, unless he is selling to you, then they are the bees knees, so if you buy from a dealer, then do the same, and say that the accessories and mods are worthless to you.

I've found when I traded cars in in past the dealership salesmen never even looked inside of it which amazed me. I don't think they really knew what to look for. They always had me pop the bonnet, but never checked any oils to see if it had recently been serviced or anything. Just going by the appearance of an engine won't tell you jack as it'd get cleaned and detailed anyway. It was all about the exterior. The interior was always very well looked after, but it could've been torn to shreds and wouldn't have effected the price they offered. The same oil could've been in the engine for 50,000km, been tar like and blacker than the inside of a coffin on as moonless night.

It was always interesting too as I serviced the cars myself shortly after buying (even when new). All of the times I traded cars in it only dropped the selling price by $500. Heaps more money in my pocket at the end of the day when I change lubricants, etc myself and only lose $500 on the trade in price. The dealerships probably then dodgied up a service log book themselves as it does help with them trying to sell a car, unless they auction it off which is also another favoured manouvre. A lot of them do sell trade-ins at auction and buy some yard stock from auctions too. Combine that with a completely ficticious and fanciful story about the previous owner who you'd be led to believe were best friends with the salesman for 15 years. They use old fashioned crap/lies which work and the previous owner jibe works all the time. "Had to sell the 4wd to downsize." The one owner sales pitch is not necessarily a good thing either. It can also be years of neglect by one owner due to lack of funds, complacency and not giving servicing the vehicle a 2nd thought, or not wanting to think about it due to cost or too much work involved. Whereas various owners tend to look after the car very well during the initial 12 months of owning it.

I am facing a similar dilemma. I have a 2002 Prado VX with just under 100K on the clock. We recently replaced the original factory GrandTrek rubber with Bridgestone Dueler D694LT all round (except for the spare) and spent ~ $2.5K on replacing the timing belts, radiator, water pump, and other sundry items. The mods made to it include fitting an ARB steel winch bar, IPF spotties, Uniden UHF, & window tinting.

I'm not sure what it's worth today but looking to upgrade. Buying new is out of the question for a model with similar specs, I just don't have $90K laying around. Where's the best place to look at used values other than carsales.com.au?

I've been looking at Carsales and Drive but still struggling to work out a value as most have over 150K on the clock. Mine has around 93K, would this increase its value over similar spec models of the same vintage?

Yes fido the lower the better and increases value PROVIDING the cars in good nick every where else, you can have a car with extremely low klms but if the rest is a heap of shit its worth nothing. Super super low klms may be an attractive selling point but not always a good thing. I bought a very low klm VL ex chaser back in there day and it had quit a few issues due to the 2nd owner hardly drove it so aircon seals were stuffed, flat spots in tyres and a few other issues. Id rather buy some thing with slightly higher klms thats been well serviced then some thing with low klms but never seen a workshop (plenty of them around)....Best way is basically do what your doing and is to see whats selling and will give you a rough guide of what the price may be. It amazes me the amount of people who want top $$$ but dont even vac the car out or clean in the boot, give it a good polish, etc etc. My cars when I sell them are normally better then when I bought them. Worst part is waiting around for ass holes who ring you and say yeah mate Ill be there in an hour and they dont turn up. I only ever use my mobile for advertising as well not my land line, if they want the car bad enough they will ring your mobile. I like to ring them back if they decide not to turn up and thank them for wasting my time. Ive had people tell me "man its the best one we have seen"" and offer me a couple of grand less then what I have been asking, in no uncertain terms I tell them to P*ss off and stop wasting my time. I like it when they say "but dude I can buy the same thing for this price and its better"" well what the F*** are you doing here then ???.........I dont give a shit as I know my cars are genuine, log books, service history, and there getting a good car not clapped out piece of shit like a certian mob like to try and sell you..........Cheers Steve

Hi, i own a 2001 vx diesel and i live in dominican republic. In here toyotas are kinda overrated because of the fact they are way too good and reliable, this is a tropical country so there are as much as toyotas as people (not exxagerating). the 90 series price is around 11k in the market here, i was thinking on selling it since there is a 120 series and a 150 series in my house (yes we love prados) but then i started thinking , on why would i sell it? its an excellent vehicule and economic. I think you should ask yourself if you really need the money, and if you dont, then dont sell it.

Fido, I would think given that u r in WA and prices t dearer, 20-22 would not be out of the question, 10 years old but low Klms and show all the receipts of recent work to prespective buyers. Car sales.com and I reckon it will snapped up. Keep the spots and UHF for the new ride.

Hutch, I'm actually in Vic. I have all the service receipts, in fact just spent $2.5K getting the major things done that would normally be done at the 100K service (timing belts, water pump, new radiator). The tyres were replaced with Bridgestone Duelers at ~83K and the odometer has just ticked over the 100K mark (thought I was at 93K but must have misread). I went and checked out a 2009 150 Kakadu today at the dealer where we purchased our current Prado, couldn't toss around any figures though as they were shut :-(. I'm hoping to save the hassle of a private sale if I can get a good trade in, shall have to see what I can squeeze out of them.

Hi there Fido, the only way ever to get a good deal is sell your prado privately then buy your new one. They always use the trade in as the playing hand. Im sure you know how it works but say they offer you 10k for yours they wont budge on price for the kakadu, you have a winge and they say ok 12k trade in, you think great. They have asking price of say 80 for the kaka its cost you 68k change over. If you sell privately and say get even 15k for yours then you walk in to buy the same kaka, you can then talk him down to say 75k, you just saved yourself 8k. I know some people couldnt be bothered with the bullshit some times of selling privately but definately come out better off. Some people dont bother if there on lease etc they just trade and buy.....Cheers Steve PS think there going to insult you with a trade in price unless they have the kaka jacked up with high over the top price...

Well all I can do is try, I'm not a bad negotiator. At the end of the day it's the changeover figure that counts but getting the price of the new car down means lower stamp duty, etc. The one I'm looking at is used so I'm not sure of the markup they would have put on it.
