  • Squealing under chassis

Hi all I'm based in Cairns in FnQ. I'm Irish and live up in cairns. I drive a 90 series and I love it and mind it like my first born. I have developed a squealing noise underneath somewhere around the middle to rear of the vehicle. Initially I thought fan belts, but got them check aswell with a rocker gas done too. But they cannot find the squeal. It sounds like a belt, randomly comes into the vehicle. Main dealer couldn't find it. If revs drop below 1500 to idle or go above 2500 it stops. Also if you apply the break it stops. It also is only in the vehicle when moving. No other issues have been noticed. Does anyone have any ideas, because I have no clue as to what is wrong with it. Can someone give me an idea?

Check your engine mounts & transmission mounts.

When you say you apply the breaks it stops ?? Did the mechanic check the brake pads ??? They may be getting extremely low either front or back or both......Cheers Steve

Hey all, nope it's not mounts or anything like that, they checked gearbox for leak when I saw oil, definitely not brakes, they have been done, I'm wondering can a drive going or gone squeal like a belt ( I always thought they bang) or could it be cv related or diff related?

This I am going to try because it kinda sounds like a mild metal on metal ish sound plus I have the vehicle for 30000km and it's never been done. I got a good diagram where all the nipples are just have to park it somewhere I can get underneath as I don't have a lift on it. I drive it the very odd bit of offroading but mainly because I have a very bad back and find it comfortable for that.

Nothing was done, it just came into the vehicle, haven't gotten around to greasing yet, but the sound is gone out of the vehicle again. Im wondering could a stone been lodged somewhere. I got underneath it yesterday and could find nothing loose or that could grind in underneath so after that i do not know what to do with it. All wheel bearings seem ok, nothing is giving when i pull at it, Im not small, I'm a union prop for a Cairns Team lol. So i think it would have given a little if gone.

Ideas that come to my mind are:-
                      - Brake sheild, a slight bend can cause it to scrape on the disc.
                      - Hand brake pad/drum issues (could it have been missed?).
                      - Where the front outer CV slides into the hub assembly, there's usually a steel ring to seal the connection. It can scrape on the front hub housing and make noise if not lubed.

What can really help with diagnosing these kinds of issues, is to have your car lifted both ends at once and run the car. With all wheels spinning at once someone outside should be able to identify the source very easily (assuming it still occurs with the suspension drooped).

                        Madmac,

My friend had quite similar problem when we get out from mud offroad.
The rim and tire was full of mud.
Went he drive in slow speed on the road there is not issue...once he reach around 80-100km, the tire and body start to vibrate.
The next morning after he done the car wash, the problem was done.
We suspect the vibration could cause from the mud that stuck on the rim and tire, that could be gone after the car wash.
