  • changing head light wattage for 90 series

    hello

I need to change my headlights and was wondering if Toyota the best place to get new bulbs or are aftermarket bulbs better?

Has anyone upgraded the wattage of their headlight bulbs - without
having to upgrade the wiring loom to support the amps? I wouldn't
    mind having brighter high beams.

    thanks.

If you use the search button, you will find a multitude of posts already here about changing bulbs and also what types are best, Fatboys, HID etc.

Theres a few of them so it will take you a bit to read thru them all.

I have put Narva Plus 50 globes in mine and noticed a slight improvement. As they are the same wattage you don't have to upgrade your wiring. I have heard the Fatboys are quite good, although over $100 for a pair! Philips have released a Plus 80 globe but haven't heard any reports or seen prices.

      Cheers,

      Mark.

I have Philips X-Treme Power +80% bulbs. Now I´ve use them about half of year. They are brighter than +60% GE bulbs which I had before.

I purchased recently pair of Osram Night Breakers to my wifes Carina E, they are +90 %. They are like Philips but the glass part of the bulb is larger/fatter, think they last longer because of the higher gas volume. Ex-bulps (Philips X-Treme Power) died after 8 months.

Both are with original watts: 60/55W

changing head light wattage for 90 series

I bit the bullet and bought a pair of Fatboys IPF globes from ARB today - cost $152 (Ouch!!!) The IPF globes are described as:

            - a super low beam -H4 12V 60/80W
-Optical equivalent of 150W highbeam and 190W lowbeam.
-IPFs most powerful H4 upgrade, suitable for standard wiring.
-Suitable for factory headlights with resin reflectors/lenses.

The guy I bouht it from had a pair in his 120 Series and loves them!

Cant wait to put them in tonight and see how they work. I'll write back and leave my feedback.

the Fat Boys turned out all right - they are a much "whiter" light than the stock "yellowish" lights and they are brighter. The true test will be when I am out of the city in pure darkness - this will be the real test. I dont have any spotties so for me anything better than the stock lights are an improvement.

I got out of the city and found the Fatboys to be not as good as I expected. Before buying the lights I had searched the net (Google was great for this) and there was a lot of positive feedback from different sources/forums - I recall one being Jeep club. Perhaps their stock lights aren't as good as Prados and anything is an improvement. This would be the case with the old Toyota ute I had years ago. For $150 you would expect a great deal more for your money.

The sad part was both guys at the ARB shop said the Fatboys X51 are great and would make a considerable difference. One of the guys was using them in his Prado 120 Series! Hum,... must have been a slow day for those guys and they needed a sale...

Make sure your lights are adjusted correctly.

I have tried the fatboys (and done a thread on the install and comparison photos) and found they made about a 30% difference.
(This was a vast improvement over stock).

HID is the next option to look at.

Yep the Standard Prado lights are not the best....

Best standard low beam lights Combo Van/Based on Barina - height adjustable form inside the cab!
Best Standard high beams - VY Commodore ( haven't tried a VE yet!)

If I could combine these two into 1 I'd be happy.

For spotties, I have two Round IPF's fitted with the 60W UV IPF globes. Equivalent to around 130Ws. I like them because they have lasted a lot longer than any 130w globes I ever had before.

My only real issue is with round driving lights.......they give a great beam down the road, but not much left & right especially on those narrow fire-trails! I might have to go back to my rectanglular ones?

Oh, you will also find that the fog lights help heaps on the Prado for general lighting, just remember thats illegal to have them on unless visbility is poor. I'm thinking of adding a circuit to turn them off, when I switch back to low beam, since they do a great job of filling in the gap on the road right in front of the car, before the driving lights take over.

                      Cheers
