  • Prado wont move when starting!

Hi, I started my 2000 GXL 3.4 manual today after it had not been driven for 4 days and when I tried to move, It jamed as if something was blocking the wheels. I tried moving forward and reverse, check the wheels and under the car and it still wouldnt budge. I then put it in low range 4WD and apon trying to move again, it made a clunk noise and then rolled freely. It seemed to drive okay afterwards. We had gone through a creek crossing on Sunday at about 0.4m which shouldnt be deep enough to get into anyware. It is very humid here in the topend and there has been lots of rain over the last week so Im wondering if it could of been surface rust on either the diff or transmission. Is the handbrake on theese 95 series a seperate drum or is it activated on the rear brakes?
Im going to change the diff and gearbox/transfer oil on the weekend to see if any moisture has got in.
Any ideas on what could of locked the car up?

    Blatchy,
May only have been rust on the brake disc,s :?: (you mentioned creek crossing)
Many Year's ago I had to winch a new car Rolls Royce out of a container that had been driven in the snow in England prior to going in the container for shipment to Australia. (The Disc's had rusted that badly it locked all wheels)

    Cheers,

I now beleive it was the rear disc's that had surface rust which stuck the pads to them. I checked underneath and the handbrake operates onto the rear discs. We had another car here where I work have the same problem this morning with its drum rear brakes. I had to remove the drum on it to free it up as it didnt have the power to break free of the rust.
Ill have to remember to leave the handbrake off after creek crossings. This humidity is unbeilivable after coming from dry Central NSW!

I had this problem a lot usually after a water crossing or I hosed underneath after the beach and the car was left standing for a couple of days.

It was the handbrake pads not releasing.

This also can affect the 120 as well.
