  • 3.4 lt V6 and exhaust fumes

    G'day everyone

First time post. Recently picked up a 2000 V6 90 series with 114,000 km on the clock. Very tidy car. Only issue I feel it has is the exhaust fumes. It smells a little rich to me, thoughout all stages including cold idle, and traffic lights after reaching operating temp, although no black smoke, and the tail pipe is clean as a whistle.

I've done a bit of reading through the older posts here and taken the advice to clean out the MAF with MAF sensor spray. But to no avail. I then realized that my particular model doesn't run a CAT or O2 sensors.

My question is to the guys that have the post 2000 model 3.4lt V6's - Do any of your vehicles have the same fume issue? Or is it confined to the non CAT 3.4lt's?

Thanks in advance guys. This forum is awesome.

It's probably due to lack of cat, all those toxins make a difference to the smell. I'd suggest finding another 3.4L petrol to have a sniff of.

The computer manages it all automatically so I don't think there's anything you can tune. You've already cleaned the maf, perhaps clean the entire air intake, then monitor coolant and engine oil levels in case they're burning (but IMO it's the lack of cat).

Agree with the lack of a CAT being the issue. Mine doesn't have one & has a distinctive rich smell to it..

Probably a silly question, but what does the cat look like? Mine seems to smell rich most of the time and when it's cold (mainly) the smoke looks white...

looks like a muffler, you will also have sensors either side. white smoke? burning oil?

My 02 95 series V6 auto had a rather rich smell to it as well, especially noticeable when idling under the carport.

White smoke equals water vapour (steam)?
