Something broke in my heater system. The rotary control was jammed and when I looked into it the problem appeared to be in the actual heater box under the dash. The flap valve to direct air flow was stuck, i gave it a wiggle and something seems to have broken inside. It did free up, but now the rotary control only works to change the air direction from face vents to demist - the foot vents don't seem to function at all. Not good in a Canberra winter.

Anyone experienced this problem?

This is a common problem with the older style cable controls, the wire can become frayed, and jam the cable inside the outer cable casing, you just need to turn the rotary dial a little bit each way until the fray breaks off. or better still, disconnect the cable from the back of the dial control and use a pair of pliers to force the cable to slide inside the casing.
But in your case you may have inadvertently detached the cable elsewhere.
