90 series TD "cluncking" noise

When I drive, if I take my foot off the accelerator and put back on, I get a cluncking noise, like something is moving forward. I have replaced the gearbox mount, and an engine mount. The mechanic has been under the car while shifting into drive and pressing the accelerator etc, but can't figure it out either. He seems to think it might be just some slop in the gears. Any ideas?

Have you greased the tailshaft joints lately? Maybe not the problem in this case but it is one source of such noises that can be discounted.
