  • 2002 Prado TX 4x4 fuction

    Hi, I'm purchasing a 2002 TX "Limited" model and have no idea how to assess the functionality of the transmission. As far as I understand, the vehicle is full time 4wd. It has a shift lever for moving from H to HL, then through N to LL. Separately, it has a dial on the dash labeled "Diff lock" that toggles between "off" and "RR". Can anyone help me decode this?

    How many diff locks does this model have, and which are engaged with which options?

    A simple explanation:

    The Prado is full time 4WD. H is this. HL is High Locked, which locks the centre diff so that power is transmitted equally between front and back axles. Use this for ice, mud, dirt or easy hills. You can go from H to HL when moving.

    N is Neutral, bascially you will never use.

    LL is Low Locked. This is same as HL but with low range. Use for steeper hills and some other situations. Never switch from HL to LL unless you are stopped. You can go from LL to HL when going slow.

    The diff lock is (probably) for the rear diff. This is an after market addition. This locks it so that the power going to the rear axle then goes 50% to each wheel. This is used in very hard conditions and will give you the maximum traction. Only use when in HL or LL.

      Helps tremendously. That set up is what I was beginning to think, but as someone new to 4WD systems, I didn't know whether the HL and LL were locking the center or axle diffs. Makes sense once explained.

      Final question - is there a limit to how fast you can be going while changing from H to HL? As in, while idling in drive vs 35mph?
