Centre Diff Lock

After some offroading on Saturday and getting horribly stuck in mud.(Recovery took 3 hours)I shifted the stick back to HH but the Centre Diff Lock does not want to disengage.
Where do I start to look?
Any advice please?

did you try reversing up, going on and off the throttle etc first?

Do you know if the CDL shift works mechanically or is it powered by an elictric motor?

CDL is mechanical. As well as reversing up etc, just check that there isn't something that may have dropped into the gaiter around the stick which is actually stopping the lever from coming back fully. You may have a sticking sender switch too. Getting the CDL to disengage should not be difficult.

All of the gears and associated bits has some 'slop' built in so that there is a degree of looseness in the system. When you lock the diff, some of this slop is there so that the various teeth etc and interlock. If there was no tolerance it would be like threading a needle with cotton that was exactly the same size as the hole. Damn tricky. During driving, some of that slop gets taken up by twisting etc. When you come to disengage the lock, simple friction on the toothy bits prevents the parts from disengaging. If you reverse up steering from side to side, you create an opportunity for that slop to distribute and allow the part to mechanically release.

Thank you Landcrusher.I've tried reversing up,lifting the wheels and all the other tricks.Nothing happened.I took the car in to the workshop this morning to have the transfercase removed and sorted.
Will keep you posted on progress.
I need it for the weekend,hope it will be done in time.

OK, could be a faulty switch or possibly you've no oil in your diff!

i have had this problem with mine.

it used to disengage, but it was always slow. so i got underneath with a grease gun and greased everything i could find on the drive train. seemed to work well, it now drops out very quickly. almost instantly.

Some feedback on the problem I had.
Eventually replaced the complete transfercase with a good secondhand one.
The planitery gear inside the transfercase broke into peices.Dont know exactly what the caused it.The macci who worked on my car said I must avoid using the centre diff lock on its own but rather use it with low range to prevent this from happening again.
It was an expensive excercise but at least I am back on the dirt roads.

Huh? Only use CDL in low range. Not heard that one before. I use mine all the time. I shift on the fly too. When I see a huge puddle in the road for example and I'm doing 50, I just shove the lever forward and it makes the car really stable as you hit the water. I'm talking about standing water here, not crossing a river. The book says that's fine and certainly does not indicate it's only for use in LR. I use mine constantly. I have never heard on one failing I have to say. Gotta be rare that one.
