  • Both fuel pumps on 3.4 failed

Has anyone got any ideas for me on why both fuel pumps failed last weekend on way to a weekend of 4WDing. Car is now sitting at Toyota waiting to be diagnosed(at least 2 weeks till they can get to it). Had RAA check it out and couldn't find the issue, neither pump running at all.
Both tanks full at the time and can hear the solenoid switching between both tanks

Any suggestions to get car on the road again would be great

Yes put the meter on the plugs front and back, have power to that point. Allm relays and fuses found tested Ok. followed loom as best as possible and all felt ok(not the easiet thing to get under when stuck on a a rocky 4wd track). Both power plugs checked cleaned and re connected.

It is a 98 GXL with 113k on the clock so can't see the pumps giving up yet. You can't get to the pumps unless you drop the tanks and Im not sure if there is another fuse right at the pump.

What was Toyota thinking not putting an access hatch above the fuel pumps!

Strange both have stopped... what are the odds of that?

          2 in 1, or 1 in 2

I wonder if it is an earthing issue? Loose plug?

2 failing at once is a pretty big ask or a damn unlucky day...

When you find a good mechanic it is worth the wait. It is only a small dealer with a couple of mechanics and one of them is on holidays.

You should see how long some of my customers have to wait  May next year is kiind of free currently...

Good tradesmen (and mechanics) are hard to find nowadays and its only getting worse.

I can understand good service is worth waiting for... but to even have a look at it :?
I admit I have no idea as to what would be involved but 2 weeks without an opening, that's one damn busy work shop.

My mechanic is always busy and for scheduled servicing etc it can take a couple of weeks to get in... but if it's urgent they'll always find a way to at least check it over.

                    Zimm.

May I suggest Graham West workshops on Marion rd, Parkeholme.

The have done my fleet of vehicles which range from L300 vans thru to blown v8 commodores. They are exceptional mechanics and troubleshooters.

I would highly suggest haveing Brett (West) look at your vehicle. They also have a 4wd dyno that can let them tune your vehicle properly.
He also does LPG sequential injection on Prados.

Thanks Team Piggy, but I am 250 kms from my car and it is another 250 kms from Adelaide. The time isn't too much of an issue for me (except I will miss a trip to memory cove this week end) as I have other means of transport.
I just want know what it is. What sold me on the Prado was its 2 separate tanks and separate fuel pumps so if I am bush and one stops, gets punchered or contaminated I have a back up to get me out. Then this happens.

Seriously though, Westy could help you out if you got the car to him.

                        Good luck

Re: Both fuel pumps on 3.4 failed

Well the verdict is in........it seems both tanks were contaminated with water and it had been in there for quite awhile as both are quite rusty and need replacing. As do the fuel pumps as both failed due to the fist full of rust forcing its way through rendering them U/S. It was most likely the corrugated road I was traveling shook the rust around and the pumps sucked it up.

It also explains a few issues I have had in the last 6 months starting with U/S injectors and a sub tank fuel gauge getting jammed on full for a while.

So hopefully now with 2 new tanks (second hand) and 2 new fuel pumps and a fuel filter, things should be right for a bit. Just need to find the cause of the water. I might start by changing fuel stations.

Just out of interest how much were the pumps and how much to fit,
                            regards,

All up it came to about $1250.00 which included 2 full tanks of fuel. I went for second hand tanks and pumps that had been flushed and tested. New pumps would have cost $375 each and I didn't ask the price for new tanks.
