  • Newbie with some questions...

Hi, we've been looking for a Prado for sometime now and finally we've got one! Took a while to find the right one (and a couple of State Roads inspections) but we're very happy and picked up our 2001 GXL on Friday last week.

I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone here may be able to answer. The first is that the ignition barrel seems to be very worn. With a bit of effort, the key can actually be taken out whilst driving. Not sure if it's the key or the barrel but wondering what advice you could give me. We have only one key and the remote locking is on a separate device (a black tear-drop shaped unit with a single round button).

The other question is around the dual fuel system. It's a vapour system fitted last July by a Toyota dealer and we're wondering how often we should drive on petrol only?

    Thanks,

    Welcome fruitbat
Always good to have another 90 series on board.

My workmates dad has a 99 GXL and I can't say I've noticed any movement in the key barrel the couple of times I've driven it. Hopefully someone will be along with a more useful answer
    Cheers, Leon

With duel fuel car, you need to drive about 5 minutes in petrol once a week to prevent blocking of the petrol EFI system. That's what my LPG installer told me

        Re: Newbie with some questions...

        Thanks for the replies.

The key problem was solved by a very helpful locksmith. He cut a standard blank key for nothing, turned the ignition and then showed me that the key couldn't be removed so it's just a couple of chipped keys to be cut and coded. Does anyone know if it's possible to code the keys to the immobiliser yourself or is it best left to a Toyota dealer?

        Thanks,

          Re: Newbie with some questions...

As you have already stated - the keys and the immobiliser are separate units on the earlier Prados.

I replaced the ignition switch for around $100 from Toyota. Immobilsers on my 1998 GXL are still working with original batteries!

If the keys are sloppy have someone look at renewing the actual keys. My brother's 2002 90 series did the same.
