  • Air Conditioning question for 1997 GXL

First of all would like to say a big hello to everyone on the forums. I recently purchased a 1997 GXL and this is my first post.

When I purchased the vehicle the air conditioning was not working. The clutch on the compressor was not engaging when I switched it on and I suspected there was no gas in the system.

I recently then took it up to an air con servicer and attempted to get it re-gassed. We worked out pretty quickly it had a cracked pipe from rubbing on the chassis as the plastic support bracket had broken.

This is no big deal the pipe is cheap and I can easily replace it myself.

My question is, I am assuming the clutch on the compressor is not engaging because it has a pressure switch and knows there is no gas in the system and therefore will not engage. Would this assumption be correct?

I am hoping once I replace the pipe I can get the system pressurised and the compressor clutch will then engage when i switch the aircon on and everything will be fine. I just couldn't find the pressure switch anywhere and was worried there might be a problem with the compressor? I can also turn the the compressor pump manually and it seams to be fine and not seized or anything.

Thanks a lot for your help, it's really appreciated!

    Matt

Hi Matt your assuption is write . They have a low & high presure switch (all vehicles do) and this is to protect the compressor from being stuffed due to no gas therefore no oil for lubrication or too much gas and blow up the system. If you want just for a test, you can just get a bit of electrical wire, strip a bit of the plastic from either end, start the engine and turn your inside fan on and push the a/c switch to the on position then disconnect the connection on the hi/low pressure switch under the bonnett then get the bit of electrical wire and bridge the two terminals on the wiring harness not the switch, you should here/see the clutch on the compresor cut in and the idleing up of the motor BUT only do this just to make sure the compressor is working, then take off the wire and put back together as it was. YOU DONT WANT TO SUCK ANY CRAP IN THROUGH THE DAMAGED PIPE or YOU WILL STUFF the compressor and will be up for around $800 to $1000 for a new one   . Hope this helps you out. You could get the pipe repaired by Enzed or Pirteck if need be.If you are regassing it yourself (not sure you are or not :?: ) Make sure the gas is measured in, not just going by the air bubbles in the sight glass.
