  • Getting spare keys cut

I have a 97 petrol Grande which I bought second hand in 2000. I went to get a spare key cut and was told that the key I had was not the Master key (cant remember the exact description) and because that had the chip in it I could not get a spare key cut that would work.

I went back to the dealer and you can imagine how helpful they were after that period of time.

Any way it seems that the only solution apart from only having one key is to get the car re keyed at about $2000.

Has anyone else had this issue?

You'll find that most "master" keys have the remote buttons for the doors (and the immobiliser where appropriate), whereas the "slave" keys have no buttons at all (I think that's right). This usually happens when buying 2nd hand cars privately as most people don't know until like you, go and get a key cut.

      Re: Getting spare keys cut

Hi I have the 99 Prado Snowy,

My keys are black for master and a grey spare, both have chips but different key pattern. The only diff in what they do is that the grey key cannot lock/unlock the glove box.
Neither keys have remote buttons, mine's on a sep unit attached to the key ring.
      .
When my master key stopped working i had a new one made from the grey key and moved the chip across... works great, cost $80.
      .
      Hope that helps

The key is black and there is no remote central locking just the Key.

I asked the fella who makes the keys on Ebay how to find the code so you can get a new master key cut. He told me its a series of numbers on a small metal tag that came with the original keys. I went on a hunt through my Prado and guess what  I found it stuck on the very last page of the warranty book. hows that for luck.... you might want to go through your books if you have them..

              Re: Getting spare keys cut

I know the post is getting old but i have been doing a bit of internet searching and found that the key code can also be found on some models on the door barrel in the drivers door.
I was also informed that if you have a good master key (Black) put it away and only use the grey. The reason is that although all keys have the same chip only a master key with unworn teeth can activate the ECU into program mode which allows for you to program new keys.. bit of a worry..

Thanks for that! When I purchased my RV The grey key was worn Got a new key cut, and put the new key away for a spare

I will now swap the keys over and put my black key away

Owning a basic RV I never gave "chiped keys" a thought

                  Re: Getting spare keys cut

You can get any key with chip cloned by key smith with modern tools, it works as good as the original. And you can get the number of the key from your local Toyota dealer, if you are the owner of the car.

I had only one key (grey) left, when I bought my 90. Now I have got the new key with cloned ship and cutted with Toyota key number. As good as original and cost 40 euros. No more worries about loosing the only key.

In Finland at supermarket lock smith. Grey key is enough, you can get a clone of it. Works perfect.

                        KZJ90,

No worries, he can just fly to Finland, find a supermarket and get a new key cut then fly home. Much cheaper than re-keying his truck. What great advice.... :?
