• What is it ?

Hi,

I have been meaning to ask this for a while. There are 2 rubber things on the under-carriage of my 90 that I can't work out their purpose.
The first one hangs off the exhaust pipe just before the main muffler.
16082009(002).jpg[/attachment:hwqsqrdd]
The second one sits on the side of the transfer case and looks like a support for when it is removed from the vehicle, which seems a like over-kill to me.
16082009(003).jpg[/attachment:hwqsqrdd]

Can anyone identify their purposes?

cheers

They are vibration dampers.

Always wondered what they were. looking at replacing the exhaust with 2 1/2' system, I presume they wont be putting the exhaust one back on.

OK. Not the answer I expected, but an interesting purpose. Got to get my head around how they actually serve that purpose.

Thanks Duff.

Re: What is it ?

They're just designed in such a way that they vibrate counter to the part they're attached to, which cancels the vibration out.

WORD OF WARNING, lol, don't break them! that silly rubber block on your gearbox is worth nearly $500!

My last Hilux had that gearbox vibration damper also, not long after I bought the car the rubber block split almost in half. Toyota wanted just on $500 for a complete new unit; the rubber block was not available as a separate part of course

Fixed it by glueing the rubber block together with a blob of silicon, worked great

The Prado also has the dampers as shown (yes there's one attached to the auto transmission) with another one hanging off the drivers side chassis rail. I assume all these things are there in an attempt to stop that annoying 2750 rpm vibration, which unfortunately doesn't work.

Cheers, Glenn

They're anti-resonance dampners, leave them on!
