ESP & TC not turning off when in 4wd

After going to lancellin over the weekend in the VX im just wondering if this was normal. Before i let the tires down completely i got pretty well bogged and the car was making lots of strange noises (assuming that was TRC) which generally helps offroad. The car also felt like it was obviously braking when cornering when i needed to keep the power on. I had a look in the user manual and it says that ESP is supposed to def turn off when centre diff lock is selected. I dont have any other dashlights come on when going into 4wd. Just wondering if anyone could help me out. Ive never had a prado with all the gadgets so idk what they're supposed to do?

My '00 VX doesnt have ESP, but i can confirm that TRC still runs with the centre diff locked and/or high/low range selected.

Ive found the only way to turn off TRC is to unplug the loom running to the ABS connector on the master brake cylinder. Itll log some errors on the ECU, but no harm done...

Ive been meaning to install a bypass to simply switch off TRC when i dont want it (sand etc).

Hi Guys,

My 01 VX is the same. Lock the center diff and the electronic stability control is disabled but TRC is always on. This is just the norm

Hi Dan,

I have an 11/2001 build VX and the TRC stays active in low range plus I am certain I don't have VSC.

I think its a Grande option .

Hi Lee,
If you want to check to see if you have VSC, switch on your ignition and the 4 warning lights will light up (2 either side of the picture showing all your 4 wheels and center diff). Im fairly sure your car will have it, especially if it has the large electric accumulator master cyl. If your warning lights arnt lighting up it may also be a fault in the system like mine did when i first bought it. A quick trip to toyota fixed the problem when they used their scan tool and found the YAW sensor wasnt zeroed????? re-set and now all is good. Give me a yell if you need more info

Hi Robo,

On mine I only get the ABS and TRC lighting up, one on either side of the 4 wheels & centre diff lock lights.

My Prado is serviced by Toyota so I don't think I have VSC but happy to be wrong

I have 01 Grande turbo diesel, it has traction control and stability control, when I lock the centre diff lock by pushing the button on the right of the dash the stability control is turned off either high or low range (light on dash comes on) the traction control is on all the time either high range/low range/centre diff lock button either on or off. Unless its a grande it wont have stability control, only ABS and traction control. Regards Steve

Stability control only available on the series 2 Grandes. I had series one VX Grande (1996 to 1999) it didnt have stability control or traction control only ABS, just because it has the bigger master cyl doesnt mean it has stability as it has the same master cyl for traction control only, I have 01 T/D grande now it has stability as well BUT can you believe it doesnt have dual air, it only come out with duel air in T/D models in 02 then it was climate control as well, Toyota did some dumb things, my old 97 V6 VX Grande had duel air, also when the series 2 come out they seperated the model, before in series 1 it was RV,GXL, VX Grande, then you had snowys etc, series 2 all the same except they had seperate VX model, then straight Grande which gave you stability,leather and sunroof couple of other things...........Regards Steve

Note where it says control it has next to it .......Dynamic Stability ........... The redbook is a bit wrong because if you look up the 01 model in T/D model (myn) it says it has duel air but not stabilty, look at the specs above for 02 it doesnt have duel air but has stability control, myn is definately an 01 model

My understanding is stability control is a Grande option and also on the TX Diesel but not the VX Petrol,

must be all that power from the diesel :roll: requires electronic stabiltiy assistance to keep it on the straight n narrow :lol:

LOL I wish, personally I find it a bit underpowered and the fuel consumption not that great, around 13.4L per 100 round town and 10.2 freeway ?? I would have thought around the 11's for town and 9/10 for freeway, Still a great vehicle but running out of room (2 year old, another one soon) Looking at getting a D4D lux with canopy etc but not sure yet, the prado only has 95k on it, all the SR hilux's I have looked at have big klms the best one so far is an 05 with 176k on it, want to find a few more things out about them first, any injector/pump issues, any cracking in the bodys etc etc. Not sure wether you can still be a member on here if you dont own a prado ??
