  • Sub Tank

    Hi All,

Does anybody know if you get a warning light when the fuel in the sub tank is running low?

Also any idea out there how much is left in the main tank when the low fuel light comes on?

    Thanks all.

I've worked out that mine holds about 15 litres. I'll switch to the sub tank just as the light comes on.

Thanks all, this will lead onto my next question. What sort of km's do you all get when both tanks are full.

My calculations show I am getting about 1000km with both tanks full. Does this sound right to everybody? Brings fuel economy to around 15-16lts per 100km.

I agree with Trojan, I normally get around 1200km from both tanks.
I run the sub tank until the car stops (around 580km) then switch to the main tank.

(unleaded here though, not diesel... although I'd say the tanks work the same... don't quote me on that though...

I have been tracking my fuel usage since I got my 90 series a year ago, over the 32,000 klm's I've done I have averaged (as of last fill-up) 14.01l/100klm's (best 11.7 and worst 18.7) City and h'way mostly.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran the sub to the empty line then flicked to the main tank and ran that to what I though was a fair way beyond the low light indicator... filled up and put in only 125.33ltrs (travelled 932klms on that tank)

I always run the sub after filling both tanks till about 1/4 left then flick to the main tank and run till the low indicator comes on... I then go back to the sub-tank till I can fill up as the sub will also draw from whats left in the main tank but not the other way around.
                Cheers, Leon

Ian, I dont want to sound like a party pooper but running a diesel engine out of fuel is BAD. You may do this for years with no problems, but it may still be damaging components that are relying on a supply of clean diesel to lubricate and cool( eg fuel pump). This is more serious if running out whilst driving, then switching tanks and coasting along to get fuel system primed and then resuming driving. Hope this makes sense?

Yep I read this over at another www site after I posted that here.
"When the fuel tank is empty, the pump starves for fuel and the engine will run roughly and eventually stop (usually with a puff of light blue smoke through engine oil ingestion and cold firing). This in itself may seem to be of little consequence however the additional wear and tear on the injector pump internal mechanisms is significant."

So I'll be avoiding that from now on.

Ian, The more we can all help each other with stuff like this, the less money people will have to spend getting there pride and joy fixed by dealers who know how make money. For something so important you would reckon it would be in big writing in the handbook??

So the "Sub Tank" does not just pump across to the main tank then? The engine runs from either tank?

If you fill up both tanks full... and drive off using the 'subtank' you'll notice the level in the main tank will drop after time as well, not by much but enough to say there must be a bit of draw from the main tank when using the subtank.

I have tried it the other way around and have not noticed any change in the sub tank level even after a whole main tank has been used.

Well the in thing I've noticed is that BOTH gauges are wrong,
My sub tank one NEVER shows full.
And the main tank one drops very quickly once it reaches the 1/2 full mark, with the light coming on at 1/3 full.

Next question on the sub tank.....

I have just finished installing the new stereo and UHF (photos to come soon on my other post) but in the process I must have shorted the light bulb that lights up the sub tank when the headlights are on. (i.e. - Now at night you can't tell how much fuel is left in the tank)

I have been to Autobarn, Supercheap, JayCar and nobody has a replacement bulb for it. Does anybody know where you can get one? From what I have been able to find out there are no aftermarket manufactures who do them... which means I need to go to Toyota to get one but don't really want to pay their high charges for something probably only cost 20 cents to make.

I am going to try a couple of wreckers, but wondering if anybody else has come across this problem and how they resolved it.

                              Thanks all,
                              Chris.
