  • Ready to hit my favorite place , Fraser .Where's yours?

Ive spent the last few weeks playing around with the old 90 , new tyres ,changed radiator , sorted steering rack bushes , grease everything where grease can go , new brakes , service , oil and filters ,new little spoties, even built my own rod holder , finished it today . Tailor are on this time of year !...I leave on Thursday and stay for 5 days , its never long enough for me . ive visited Fraser at least 10 times in my life and still love it...I always camp , these days there is a lot of accommodation , but the simplicity of the camp site makes it feel alive . The last time a number of fully grown goannas pasted along side our tents , just casually wandering by . Those moments your happy to be alive, like when you land a good size tailor , or you watch the whales passing and breaching , those misty salt aired late afternoons giving out that light mixed with the smell of the ocean rumbling . Even the whirling by 4x4s on there way back to camp or the ones that just want to get to there destination cuz they just arrived. So many reasons to be there and so many places to visit ...

This time im accompanied by two friends from Europe who have never experienced anything like it in there lives . They r gonna shit bricks and then they r gonna fall in love with the place just like i did........I not a mad obsessed fisherman but Im just like one of those tailors,,hooked line and sinker!

My favorite escape ! Fraser Island.

Fraser is pretty magical- I'm lucky in that it's about 50 minutes drive for me. You've got to go in the off season (around now). School holidays is just insane. Check out Double Island point if you haven't already- It's a short trip up from Rainbow (watch tides) and is great for throwing a line out or going for a walk up to the lighthouse on the point.

Too old for Fraser, I go back to the days when Ivan Udavic's was the only shop at Rainbow and the flashest 4X was a 3-speed Patrol. Most fishermen had homemade buggies that they left behind in the bush. Just bring the battery, some fuel and away they'd go. With a permit and you could go anywhere, people looked after the place, all without the need for legislation. Fraser was a real test of your skills driving an underpowered Land Rover on skinny tyres. Then the mining was stopped, camping was restricted, cars got faster and the paying public ruined the place dumping more rubbish than at a tip. Can remember the line up at Easter midnights, cars from the barge half way back to Rainbow. I've just spent a few days at Inskip. Again inconsiderate campers left rubbish behind, empty stubbies buried in the sand and to top it off the low lives did the rounds stealing anything they fancied. Give me some corrugations and distance from cities, Lawn Hill Gorge comes to mind.

You are never too old for Fraser! My first trip was last century. Sadly gets a bit busy when I used to have to work around leave. I have time now.

First trip was in an Austin Gypsey. Then the 3 speed Pooey, which got bogged in Eli Ck. Memories. Fishing at Indian Head. Fixing a bogged Range Rover that the driver overheated when he got stuck in Eli. Yes, memories.

My father lived/worked in Maryborough and was one of the first on the Maheno. Like thousands before and after me I have fished off it. No can do now.

So good to hear these stories ,my first trip there i guess was late 80"s in a short landcruiser . great days and still remember it well .Must something about that place , it falls into one of those places you cant forget

And yes Atherton , double island point is a bonous area , another place surrounded by great memories.

That place Lawn hill goerge , Carcolooks fairly isolated but must be so beautiful ,Thanks for the heads up, at least what i can see online ,but to go there for me would be 2200 klm. , I agree with you there are quieter places , but for me as a local escape is where im talking....

I’m pretty local to Fraser etc as I’m just North of Gympie and prior to that lived in the Borough.
Lawn Hill is a bit of a drive but I suggest you check all the spots as you go across. Charters Towers, Undara lava tubes, Cobbold Gorge and of course all the towns along the way.
Best pies are at the 3- ways then you head off to Gregory. Free Camp down on the river is just magic.
When you tire of that away you go to Lawn Hill. You may be tempted to stay at Adel’s Grove but take my top and keep going the extra 15k to Lawn Hill.

Huh, you're in the same neck of the woods as me. I didn't think anyone else lived here

Drop those tyre pressures hey. Sand was mega soft and very dry at Inskip. Churned up from the high hp on 45psi cars.

Home , doesnt it feel good . . Man we had a great time . From south to north , inland and west coast , good food , company ,whales ,dingos all over the place , goannas , a strange type of owl , tailor hanging on the end of my line and later in the pan ,A few beers and all is well .

bloody kookaburra swooped down in the morn at breky , grabbed a used tea bag from the table , one of the girls got such a fright she fell over backwards .
We all laughed and said how sharks or dingos dont bother us us , but the kookaburra , watch out!... The bugger!

My 90 drove real well . i find 20 psi (Hot)in sand does well , No problem at all , even though its is so very dry right now with very soft sand....

I did have one problem though ive got the transfer shifter stuck between 4H and standard drive . it got stuck there during a internal track drive and i have nt been able to get it to shift ever since . like its stuck in standard drive that is all wheel drive ... it didnt faze the trip as the prado smashed though anywhere we went with comfort and confidence . she didnt let us down . Im not sure what has hapened nor how to fix it , but we will see during this week when i open the top up and have a look .

Any advise would be very welcomed
