  • A fair price to pay

Hello all, first time user. I am looking at updating my xtrail to a genuine off roader and am looking at either Prado or Pajero. Have found a few early 2000 models but found the price varies by a fair bit. Am going to look at an 01 KZJ95R GXL 3L with 227K kms on it asking $19,990. The other is an 01 VZJ95R VX 3.4L with 116K kms asking $22900. Any thoughts welcome

I would only pay up to 15k for the diesel if it is very good nick, and 13 to 14K for the petrol.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Re: A fair price to pay

Hey mick we paid $27,000 2 years ago for our 2002 GXL 3ltr turbo diesel with no mods except for the snorkel, and 95,000 k's on the clock. It was from a dealer tho, I was on carsales.com just to see what prices they are still going for and they are holding their price well both private and dealers. There are plenty out their most already have a few mods bolted on with reasonable amount of k's all depends what your budget is, if you want to buy a cheaper stock standard one and spend $$$$ on setting one up which is a lot of fun or buy one with a few of the expensive mods already done for you eg; bullbar & suspension. Oh and welcome to Pradopoint and don't forget to put your location in.

Re: A fair price to pay

Personally I think Davros is a bit out with his prices. I have seen T/D's advertising and selling quit easily over the 20k mark, The petrol VX grande I have seen advertising around the 20k mark, there are some rough ones out their that have been trashed. I bought mine last year 01 Grande T/D with 76 k on it for 23k is insured for 30k and have had an offer for 25k (private not trade in) a few weekends ago when we were contemplating of getting a hilux.I sold my old prado 97 VX Grande last year for $16500 with 175k on it remembering it was also a series one. You wont get a 120 series for under 30k unless its done big klms so helps keep the prices of the T/D 90's up there. Here is just one page from carsales to give you an idea

Re: A fair price to pay

          I agree with Steve M,

I paid $26,000 for my 02 TD GXL - very last of the REAL Prados (with ~ 175K on it) about 3 years ago. At the time the red book was floating anywhere between $26-31k. Fortunately for me I purchased it from my father in law who just grabbed the lower figure and sold it to his favourite daughter!

I guess you will probably find differences from the East coast to the West as well though.

Either way Mick you wont regret buying a Prado.

Re: A fair price to pay

Thanx all for your advice. I have had a look at the VX. As new condition. Very impressive. Will be test driving on Saturday. Both carsales.com and drive.com estimates value this model as around $17k privately with 150k kms. thinking i will go in with an offer around this and see where it goes.
            cheers, Mick

Re: A fair price to pay

Congratulations on getting one, sounds like a good price. I may be wrong but Im sure it would have traction control as well ?? You wont be dissapointed, they are a great vehicle and very capable off road. I did a run down to wollongong and back on saturday night, got 11.1L per 100, not as good as I thought was expecting mid to low 10's but I dont muck around with it, if that was my old petrol prado would have been around the 12/13L per 100. Good on you and keep your eye out for when they organise day trips out will have to meet up. Regards Steve M

Re: A fair price to pay

I am looking at paying 17,000 for a 98 v6 prado 5spd manual . Its from a toyota dealer which i wouldn't normally buy a car this way but need to trade in my car and pay that loan off. Its done 176,000 which i think is reasonable. Doesn't look like its ever been off road. Took it for a drive didnt have any rattles or anything in it not even a squeak from the glove box. I know its probably abit pricey but seem to be a very good example. And has all its log book services done by toyota

Hi Wazza, yeah little on the high side but hey when we need to trade sometimes you have no other choice, any reason you went the manual over the auto ?? Auto great for sand driving if your into that. Slow down hill crawls you cant beat a manual but diesel better again. Hope all goes ok for you. Have you had a good look around ?? There are heaps of them for sale. I sold mine last year, 97 VX Grande with 175k on it, bullbar, cargo barrier, floor mats (carpet was like new) 2 inch OME lift and some other stuff, great condition with full service history for $16500, now have 01 T/D diesel Grande (AS PER PICTURE) (paid 23.5 last april) great car, not as good on fuel as I expected but still cheaper then the petrol especially around town, freeway not much difference a litre or 2 depending on weather, Regards Steve M

Hey Wazza, i looked around for nearly 3 months before buying. There are certinly plenty of choices out there and usually you will pay slightly more from a dealer. I went in wanting to talk about trading my 03 xtrail but they would only offer me wholesale value (10K) and basically talked me into selling it myself. If this is an option then i'd suggest you will get a better price for your existing car. Depends if you can afford the time it might take to sell it. If you can sell yourself then you open up heaps of opportunity to get a better car for your money. In saying that i did buy my 02 gxl v6 from a toyota dealer and went in hard with a low offer and settled only slightly higher, knocking $1500 off the original asking price. Anyway good luck.
