Hi guys, Am looking to buy a prado. I have found to that i Like one being a gxl 98 model and the othere being a 2002 rv6 Model . Only real difference I can see between the two is that the gxl has the body kit and power windows and power windows. Is there anything else i am missing ? Am pretty sure I am going to get the 2002 rv6 due to them giving me a better price on trade in and is sold with 12 month mechanical warranty. And the fact its 4 years younger. (Can I just say I find it funny the red squiggle line comes up under the word prado on a prado forum. Am sure you have all noticed that. I guess its a newbie thing )

How many kilometres on each. If the 1998 has close to the other ones, I would go for it. Lot more comfort (cruise control, power windows, larger wheels and more).Michael and Kelly

Re: 1998 gxl 0r 2002 rv6
the RV6 has a narrower wheel track and different diff ratios / smaller tyres from memory. I assume the Rv6 and Gxl would have different trim specs, including cruise control. in 2000 the prados had an upgrade, not sure what this consists of but remember reading about it. worth you researching to see if it is a worthy consideration.
and those wheel arch flares can be troublesome as they can be easily disloged from they lightest of tree rubs!!
as a general rule second hand car warranties aren't worth a pinch of shit. more imporntantly, how many Km's does each prado have? do they have a full service history? what is their history, for example if it has poly airbags in the rear springs, a HD towbar and electric brakes then it's likely it's been used as a tourer. or is it clean and tidy underneath and in stock form, suggesting that it's been used as a shopping trolley.
has it been used on the beach, it's ok if it has, as long as it's been looked after well and treated right, so check inside the chassis rails and the crossmembers and the corners of the engine bay for sand. then look at does it have any rust protection. and check for any signs of rust.
if one shows a better history then the other then that would definately sway my decision.
just a few things for you to consider

At first look the RV6 is only missing a few visual things and some gizmos you could live without, but research carefully - due to smaller tyres I believe they also have different diff ratios. When you add big tires you'll loose power. Of course we all loose power when upsizing tires, but the RV6 will be at a greater disadvantage compared to all the other Prados out there. You'll then want to modify the diffs, but that's a couple grand you could have spent elsewhere.glen_ep - engineered, 4" lift, 33" 255/85R16, lockers, 4.88 ratios www.pradopoint.com.au/showthread.php?17237 www.youtube.com/user/glenep www.fb.com/groups/ToyotaPrado90

If you plan on using the car for 4wding in sand and would like to visit the odd 4wd park or three, then definitely go a GXL over an RV6, but make sure it's a good buy beforehand obviously. The narrow little tyres on the RV6 will let you down otherwise. The GXL's have bigger tyres which makes a huge difference as well as the ability to carry 8 people, plus dual fuel tanks. It's got everything over the RV6 if you want to use it properly.2005 120 series V6 Grande, 2 inch susp lift (King/EFS combo), 32 inch MT’s, Safari Snorkel, rear diff lock, breathers, Light Force spotlights, UHF, dual batteries.

Re: 1998 gxl 0r 2002 rv6
Hi guys thanks for the replys. The rv6 being a 2002 model has driver and passenger airbags. As for what its use has been not sure has a metal arb bull bar and a gen toyota tow bar. Couldnt find any mayjor dust where the tools are in the side wall in the back. It has the sub fuel tank in it too. Both done similar kms about 180,000kms. Not going to get finance for the 98 so decisions been made for me just due to the age of the car haha. The thing i like about the later model is the middle seats have a split to fold one side down to gain access to back seats. different diff ratio worries me abit but oh well. You can fit bigger wheels under the rv6 cant u Might just have to add flair kit ?

I have a 98 GXL and I would go the GXL over the RV6 any day of the week. There is a whole different level of trim and comfort in the GXL. The factory GXL radio is good compared to the RV6 and the tyre and diff ratio thing makes added cost to the RV to just bring it to similar spec. The side flares have been mentioned as flimsy and in truth I have busted the right rear one off twice (once via Kangaroo and the other via Toyotas choice of factory tyres that separate). The positive side of this is both times for 15 bucks worth of plastic clips it has all gone back together (after I fibreglassed the damaged standoffs behind the scenes). I think that the single repaint from the first Roostrike on the back would have been a few hundred alone. Power mirrors will also be a happy thing in the GXL if both you and your missus alternatively drive the car. From a true 4x4 perspective there is little difference as the 90 Prado is such a capable vehicle that if you are nearing the point where the tiny differences come into play you will be doing some pretty extreme driving.
Yes you can put tyres under your RV6 but you change the factory track width of the car also, and this coupled with the need for installing flares and an inspection fee adds to the cost.
