  • Opinions invited on this potential buy

    G'day all,

First post here so be gentle. Been looking at Prados for a couple of months now. I've also been reading up on the Prados on this site and almost every other car site on the web and learning as much as I can. Its time to make a move.

Looking at the 90 Series (mainly because of budget - trying to stay under $20k) and had a look at a 2000 GXL Diesel Automatic. They want $20k for it at a dealer in Canberra. It has 200,000 km and is an auto (otherwise the missus wont touch it). I wanted a diesel to get some fuel economy so this one should still have a few years of life left in her (if it was petrol I probably wouldn't go for it with these many K's). Tyres are all shot. They said they would fit new rubber all round (so I'm expecting some cheap Bangladeshi tyres).

Service books are all stamped until about 150,000k, and then theres nothing. So I reckon he must have been doing some home based oil changes. The car looks pretty straight and clean, no obvious damage. Took it for a spin. Drives Ok but has a fair bit of play in the steering and spongy brakes. Has anybody had experience with these two issues (Steering and brakes), Do they sound expensive? I would think they might be an easy fix but not sure. In any case I would probably take out some aftermarket warranty to help with costs.

We are two adults and two kids. It'll probably be our only vehicle for about a year or two then I'll get the wife a smaller car and keep this for myself. So looking for an all round commute car, kids taxi, wife shopping, towing the boxy with a load of rubbish to the tip, and probably twice a year or so with the odd camping trip into the bush. Probably not towing a camper but you never know.

I like the Diesel / Automatic option but It appears that it is a pretty rare combination on the 90 Series. Based on internet research, I reckon the thing is about $2000 - $3000 over priced. What do you guys think?

    Cheers
    Pedro

hey pedro if you r really keen on the vehicle take it down to a vehicle inspection station (look the yellow pages) and it might cost you a few $$$ to get an inspection but a experienced mechanic will go over the whole car from head to toe and find out if there is anything mechanically wrong with the vehicle, this will give you piece of mind that your potential purchase is not a lemon. cheers samo

      Pedro
Although you are considering a diesel model ,i would suggest a V6 petrol as an alternative, you will pick one up cheaper and with less kms, that really does not cost a great deal more in running costs. The V6 motor is known to be a motor capable of high kms so will last similar to the diesel. You will find them more readily with autos and if you look around you will get one with the ABS/AIRBAG safety pack maybe a grande or VX,a good option with the family in mind. I have considered the swap to the diesel but figure if i do change it should be to a D4D,as the running costs /life span reliability is not much different with the older diesel.
      Good luck with your decision

Spongy brakes are most likely caused by old brakefluid or air in the system. If the fluid is dark then its bad, if its a golden-ish clear color then its fine. Flush and bleed brake-system and you´re set.

Steering slop might be the rackbushings, they are a high km wear item on Prados. Rack-ends and rod-ends are only other things that come to mind.

I would have to agree with rags about considering a petrol. I brought my 2000gxl V6 with 185,000km about a year ago for $15,000. I looked for quite a while and when I saw it I knew it was a great buy so snapped it up straight away.
you can buy a LOT of fuel for $5000 and is worth considering is the diesel really worth it?
also when I was looking there were diesels with similar km's going for 16-18,000 (but they went quick), remember this is over 12 months ago. I really think the prado your looking at is a bit overpriced. but if they are prepared to repair any problems before purchase and if your happy with the car and your happy to spend the money then go for it.

I think your right on the over priced part Pedro, but the problems you state can be your barganing tool, you could knock the price down by 4K, if you push the problems to the dealer, just remember they are all really easy fixes but dont let on, make the dealer think they are expensive

which Canberra dealer, I can tell you one to steer WELL clear of. They had to do $4500 worth of engine rebuild to mine cause this D!#% reckons the guy that traded it in at his lot "laced"it ... my A$$.
Running well now, needs breaks and shocks done soo though.
If you are getting it in Fyshwick, hit me up and I'll tell you who NOT to see.
BTW, I agree, go the petrol if you can. I wish I'd found a GXL but the RV6 runs nice!

Yes I agree with most of the responses so far; this vehicle sounds very expensive to me. Get a petrol, sure they suck lots of fuel but the 3.4 engine is very reliable & you won't have to worry about a cracked cylinder head which seems to be a problem with some of the early diesels.

Re: Opinions invited on this potential buy

Wow ! Thanks for all the advice guys.

If there's that much consensus about going for the 3.6 petrol variant, I'll have to give it some serious consideration. As it happens just this morning I have seen another ad for a '99 petrol Prado. Apparently with the same K's (200k) and pretty good tyres. For a helluva lot less money. And yes I agree that $5000 buys a stack of petrol. I'll have a look at it.

I have a pretty honest and good mechanic that I trust so I'll try and convince the seller of this second car to let me take it to him. The dealer would never agree to that. I'm not expecting the car to be perfect but I'd just like to know what the possible problems may be.

RogueAussie - The dealer for the first car is Commonwealth Motors (Phillip). You should be able to see the car on their site. I'm still trying to get my head around the different models. VX, RV, Grande, GXL. What the . . . ??? I read somewhere that the 2002 models (the ones with the horizontal gill bars) have some improved characteristics. Can anyone point me to a good explanation of all the models?

This is what I love about forums (fora ???). Heaps of experience about any topic you can think of. Thanks again everyone. I'll sure be a regular here after I get my Prado.

If anyone (dealer or private) selling a car wont let me take the vehicle to a mechanic of my choice then I walk away. don't care how good or cheap the car is, I don't want their mechanics opinion because of course he's going to say its good, they're paying him. I want to pay someone independant to give an honest opinion.

                      (Another petrol rant)

I was determined to buy a deisel for their economy, until I saw all the second hand 90's available! Simply put, there's 100 times more petrol 90's to choose from, most with lower kms, and a city "upbringing". I bought a very clean petrol and saved $6K. That's not just alot of petrol, that's a lot of mods! I have no regrets thus far.

Although diesel is still a safer bet years down the track (when the GFC is over and petrol goes skyrocketing).

Re: Opinions invited on this potential buy

I'm a deso head from way back but for my $$$ if I was buying right now, i would be really really considering a petrol

A couple of things to think about in your consideration between petrol and deso.
do you want to do high kms day in day out running all day long kinda thing. if not consider the petrol
will you be towing a big load all day long every day, if not consider the petrol.
the thought that petrol engines last less than deso engines is nowadays not so true. All things being equal (servicing use etc) I know of some petrol engines that will outlast their deso counterparts (same car, different engine)
Deso engines usually cost more to rebuild or replace than petrol engines sometimes more than 3 to 1
the 3.4 petrol can and often does equal the deso economy in some conditions and in most is not really that far behind it

The biggest thing I recon is that for the roughly $5k more you will pay for a deso, it will buy you some good accessories or camping gear or about 4000 litres of petrol which means about 25000kms of driving (hope my maths is right :?: )

Re: Opinions invited on this potential buy

dhula pointed out what I think is THE major decision point between a heavy petrol or diesel vehicle... If you drive a lot of suburban KM's every day, and/or, if you carry a big load every day, then definitely get a diesel. A petrol in those circumstances will chew through the $5K in no time. I only do a few KM's per day, with no load, so I don't care about fuel consumption.

As for brakes, they're certainly poor compared to small cars, but better than all the 3.4L Hilux's I test drove (rear drums). I bled my brakes recently which made an improvement.

Also, I wouldn't let a dealer put new tires on - knock some $$ off the price instead and buy your own (offroad ones).

Go for the petrol and convert it to gas dual fuel. it will save you a lot of money in fuel.

                              G'day all,

Thanks for the replies. I value the opinion of experience greatly.

I've accepted the conventional wisdom on this forum and bought meself a 2000 GXL Petrol Prado with LPG conversion already in place. Did a REVS check and had the tech-heads crawl all over it for a well spent $120. Bottom line was that it came up trumps. Good quality LPG conversion, engine looks good, Excellent condition, no prangs and little if any off-road work (that'll soon change  ).

It will need Tyres in about 20,000k but I figure thats not too bad. It has 270,000 km which I was initially concerned about but the tech report eased my worries a little.

Started at $14.5k but I talked him down to $11k. Not bad if I say so myself. I can buy a lot of tyres for $3,500.

I feel like a kid in a candy store, just that I've already bought the licorice.

I'll be a regular here now.

                              Thanks again everyone
