  • Thinking of jumping into Prado land...

Have an Xtrail (stop laughing).. want something more capable. Thinking Series 90 V6. I don't do enough long trips to own a diesel. What milage range do the V6 engines generally start showing signs of age? Eg. is 200k still got some life left in it (assuming its been treated well)? Any help greatly appreciated

Re: Thinking of jumping into Prado land...

    mattb,

I bought a 2000 90 Series RV6 with 153,000km on it. That is considered quite low/reasonable for that age of vehicle. I have read reports of these rigs holding out for many more hundreds of thousands of kms so long as they are maintained and driven ... well lets say not "thrashed".

As for fuel economy ... They aren't considered the most economic car on the road but definately not the worst. I have new A/T tyres on mine (not as aggresive as M/T and not a whimpy as H/T but tyres DO affect economy) and I get a little over 500km from the main tank and a little over 400km out of the secondary. I admit that I drive it a little harder then I should. And a majority of these kms are in Canberra traffic to and from work, I haven't done any highway driving in it as yet. Obviously the kms decrease when offroad and it becomes highly dependant on terrain.

My suggestion to you would be this: If it is in your price range, take it to a 4x4 specialist or at least NRMA/RACQ/RACV (or equivilant) have have them give it a once over, this may save you $$$ later on with unforseen issues. ~200,000km, I would suggest it still has a LOT of life left in it if you continue to look after it. And as an owner of one, I can definately say (and unfortunately my wife agrees) they are a fantastic rig to drive and more then capable offroad.

On a side note, my wife's rellies just swapped their X-Trail for a 2002 90 Series Prado (almost identical to the 2000) for the same reason as you. They wanted more capability and carrying capacity etc and they are very happy with it. Maybe if he reads this he will elaborate ...

Anyway, good luck with it, hope this helped somewhat.

DISCLAIMER: I had/have engine problems due to the previous owner, it was blowing a bit of smoke when starting and this was noticed because I demanded that it be serviced and timing belt done prior to me taking ownership. I picked this up within a few days of buying the car and the dealer paid for the engine to be all but rebuilt (stripped, bored, rings and bearings - all up about $4,300 worth of work). Only problem now is a Valve Stem Seal may have dropped (can happen - not a big deal) so it is using/burning oil. Have it booked in for week after next for them to fix (no cost - still under warranty from the rebuild) and should be good as new after that. I guess the bonus is, should the absolute worst happen, you can pick up and have a reco engine installed in a 90 series for only a couple o' thou :P

RogueAussie, thanks for the great reply. Very helpful and encouraging! Good tip re the RACQ inspection. I'll do that, for sure. One question for you... What's the total capacity of your tanks?

Off the top of my head (cause that is a stat I have never really bothered remembering) I beleive it is 160ltr. 90 main and 70 secondary. Don't quote me, I'll try to confirm for you.

BTW, Might want to tack on a Location to your details ==========>
It may help with people offering advise at some stage.

EDIT: Quick bit of digging and it would appear I am correct or out by 1ltr. It should be a 90/70 or 90/69 setup. This is from Google as I am nowhere near my vehicle at the moment.

Have you thought of the 2.7 4 cylinder. Not as powerful as the V6 of course but not bad. Plus they are WAAAAY cheaper to rebuild than a V6.

Re: Thinking of jumping into Prado land...

JUST to get you more information matt (and because I've been too lazy to pull into a servo) I have run the main to Empty. I pulled into my driveway on a little over 550km and the last 50-80km was with a trailer (in the rain for what it's worth). So, consider this; A/T Tyres, City Driving, Average of about 10 deg outside when driving, a 90ltr main and finally ME (doesn't mind giving it a bit of a giddy up) acheiving 550km (or there abouts). What's that work out to in kms/ltr? :P Any maths/enineering smarts in tha hoooouse? 8)

                Hey Matt
The V6 (if serviced regularly) will last for over 500000k's, this is because the motor is a low stress motor, meaning it is not a high revving or high kw motor, only running at around 135kw, the fuel consumption can range from around 10L/100k to 18L/100k, depending on your driving style or traffic conditions, I have driven from Brisbane to Sydney without having to stop for fuel, and then was still able to drive around sydney for a couple of days before filling up again, which in total, was just over 1300k's. Mind you I do drive the long haul at night so I don't get stuck behind traffic.
