  • Air temperature dial

Hi the air temperature dial on the dash seems to be stuck on cold, it can be turned to about half way with steadly increasing resistance until it feels like I am going to brake something if I try any harder. I havent started to investigate yet but am hoping someone might be able to at least point me in the right direction to save me some time.

    Re: Air temperature dial

    Hi Tim,
We really need more info on your car. But assuming your car does not have Climate Control, the temp dial just tugs on a cable that open and closes a tap in the engine bay to allow coolant flow into the heater core.

The first thing I would do is have an assistant attempt turn the dial while you observe the heater valve under bonnet. If you can see the tap "trying" to open, the fault is likely with the tap (jamming). If you can't see any movement, the fault could either be with cable or your ventilation controls and you'll need to try and get the unit out from the dash to have a poke around.

One other thing you might try, is removing the cable from the tap and trying to open it by hand, you'll probably need some long nose pliers to help you grip the cable to get it off.

    Hope that helps!

          Re: Air temperature dial

managed to get the wife off of the lounge without to much resistance, uncliped the cable and it still wouldnt go into the red so problem must be with the cable/dial end of things, so I pulled on the cable as the wife turned on the dial and seemed to free it up somewhat. So although still a bit stiff its at least working now which means I dont have to go investigating behind the dash, for now anyway.
          Thanks for the help

A friends 90 had the exact problem, a new cable is under 40 bucks from toyota and was not hard to change.

              Re: Air temperature dial

I had the same problem with my vehicle a year or two ago, what happens is the cable freys inside the outer casing and it digs into it and stops the cable from moving, what you can do is replace the cable, or force it a few times without the dial knob on it (so use pliers) and the freyed bit will break off, then the cable will be free again.
