In all cases, the turbo diesel version was far superior than the petrol. This driving has been in the hardest parts of NSW, on tracks closed to the public as well as normal highways. There is not one petrol that I would have preferred to have over the equivalent petrol, no matter what I have been doing.

Re beach (sand) driving. Yes, petrol is better, but unless you intend doing the majority of your driving on Stockton Beach or across the Simpson Desert and back and back again, diesel is better overall.

Sorry to sound so strong, but I really wish I had the TD! This is not to say that the V6 is not a great vehicle, it is. I have been accused of having diff lockers when I do not (by other 4WD owners) for getting up hills I found easy but they found impossible or very hard. Some of this may have been the fact that I have been professionally trained (many times for work - compulsory) as well as driving 4WDs for almost 35 years for work. However, I suspect that it is primarily because the the 90 series Prado, petrol or diesel, is a great vehicle!
Yep Petrol and auto all the way, my one, when I have driven up Mooney Mooney Hills, easerly held the speed limit fully loaded and towing a camper, was much better to drive and especially when overtaking the slower drivers, returned fuel figures at 11.5 ltrs/100km, drove from Brisbane to Sydney without any refills and was still able to drive around for a few days as well.
And yes I have previously had diesels, and the petrol is just better to drive, not that the diesel is bad, just the petrol is better.

It wasn't until common that diesel could really have been chosen on the grounds of performance. Diesel's strong points were (not necessarily still) longer engine life and reliability, fuel economy and fuel availability in the outback.

With regards to KZ always being superior, even uphills, I disagree. A Prado's ability to maintain speed, or even accelerate up a hill is dependent on the engine's power output.

Even if the V6 has to drop down to 2nd to get into its peak power band, it has more power and will outrun a KZ up a hill.

      Cheers,
      Declan.

Re: Petrol or Turbo Diesel 90???

I have a 90 series swb manual TD and it has been great, I stuck 265/75-16s on the OEM steel rims and they are still inside the arches (no Flares).
The diffs are slightly higher ratio than the widebody GX versions but thats probably a good thing for general road driving.
One point that I haven't heard mentioned is the ease of changing timing belts on the 1KZTE, I reckon 45 mins to change the belt and another 30 to reset the clocks if you have to take them out of the dash.
The V6 is a little more involved when it comes to the T-belt.

Pretty good K's, you'd have to be happy with that. Seen a few in the 300Ks but yours is the highest I've heard of first hand.

Yeah, I am happy with it, I got it with 172k on it and put another 246k on it in 8 years.
I ran it for years on Toyota 10w 40 but have recently moved to Mobil Delvac 15w 40.
I can't think of many vehicles that would do that kind of mileage with occasional towing a 8x5 twin axle trailer and never had to do any major repairs apart from a front diff last week.
They are very well built and with a little care and attention they can do stellar mileages
