    Re: Steering

What's "gone" on the racks, seals or wear? I just replaced mine due rack end seals giving up plus a bit of play from the rack ends. I changed the fluid a while back because it had gone black, not the burnt brown of cooked dexron you see in auto boxes. Now; only my opinion: there is only one thing in a sealed power steering system that can degrade to black and that is rubber from cooked seals. I reckoned that these systems are running too hot and cooking the fluid and seals so I grabbed the smallest Davies Craig txmission cooler from Supersh*te on a 20% off day and installed that in front of the AC condenser. Make sure you get a manifold type cooler not the serpentine, much more efficient! You can pick up the PS return line from the solid pipe end on the chassis rail, put the supplied 3/8 hose out and back through the radiator support just above the AC pipe cutouts Cut two holes with step drill and grommet them: return pipe->cooler->magnefine filter->reservoir (mines a diesel); It all connects up as supplied but you will need to get the filter (highly recommended, and gives the rack supplier one less thing to try and knock back a warranty claim with) and two extra hose clamps. This can only improve the system but too early to tell by how much.

Interesting mod you've done there mate - not wanting to hijack the thread - do you have any photos of what you've done there?

        Re: Steering

I knew that someone would ask that
Not at the moment, was done in a hurry. It's not rocket science though, if you Google installing an auto box cooler the principle is exactly the same. The hardest part is making a bracket for the cooler, I just used a bit of right angle aluminium screwed to the bash plate support bar. The hoses fit through holes cut in the radiator support panel between the rad and the coolant bottle just above the cutout for the AC pipes; and the filter hangs inline just before the return pipe in the res. Ebay or Western Filters for Magnefine 3/8" barbed filter.

          Re: Steering

Shaft seal was OK, just a weep and a bit of slack in the ends, but I'm a fussy pr*ck . (Much prefer to change stuff on my terms than out in the boonies). I put a bottle of Nulon stop leak in which took it up a bit, but I picked up an aftermarket off ebay for $350 so figured I can refurb the original (know any GOOD steering shops?) at my leisure. Who knows, with the cooler/filter on the cheapie may last forever! Changed at 135K. Oh and I also noticed that the seal on the shaft was a poor fit to the housing so I packed a bit of synthetic waterproof grease in on top of the bearing and sealed outer of the seal to the housing with ultragrey, the shaft sealing surface was a good fit so with a bit of extra sealing and grease it might keep the dirt out and last longer.

Hi Fellas. My 2000 KZJ95R did 200,000 km then had to have the steering rack bushes done. Did rack-end joints 1st due to faulty diagnosis from testing station. Fitted steering rack mounting bushes at same time. All good. Cheers, Derb.

About the cooling mod: was talking to a mate who has completed EVERY stage of the Endevour Rally since the first nearly 30yrs ago. He says he has actually seen the PS fluid boil on a couple of the cars (certain Commodores I think he said). He has always run one and recommends coolers on all the cars he prepares for others. Might be prudent if you have big rubber or do a lot of 4WDing or sand work.

                  Re: Steering

After doing a bit of work to the front a while back, my rack ended up leaking fluid at the top seal (int shaft) so decided to get exchange from Active as I've seen it mentioned a few times now.

Got it thru the local distributer here in Perth (Veale auto parts)
                  $830 exchange
                  No D bush
What look to be standard bushes (not sure of condition as they have been painted over but they appear very soft)
Rack ends appear to be looser than mine (they were only 1 month old)

Called Veale to inquire about the bushes and was told that they have never seen an Active rack with bushes in it before and that Active themselves said the D bush doesn't come with it.
Have sent an e-mail to Active to inquire about the bushes as the first response I got from them is that the rack comes complete with rack ends and bushes but perhaps I misunderstood that he meant bushes but not the the D bush

All in all kinda happy with the price which is about on par in this part of the country for an exchange unit but they are available cheaper elsewhere
Happy with the service as Veale got it into store straight away, no pissing about
Not overly happy about the bush saga ATM, but I'll wait until I hear from Active to clear up any misunderstanding
Can't comment on how good it is as it's still sitting on my shed table.
