Interesting idea. Just something that would make it a show stopper for me. I need to fit under 2.1 clearence... so how high will the door have to lift and will it make the car unusable in shopping centres or other multi story carparks or the garage? I figure it doesn't matter for you?

      Good luck with it.

You realise you'd need a good 3m+ clearance wherever you wished to open your door? Sounds like a lot doesn't it... but trust me, it's not! You'd find yourself smacking it into things all the time.

Have seen it done on heaps of show cars. I've also spoken to the owners of said show cars and they all regretted the fact they put them in.

            http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2007C00096/

There is a section on testing of the hinge and latch systems, where compliance needs to be demonstrated. ie the forces in the document have to be applied to the vehicle or a suitable test rig. This of course only applies to new vehicles, where state law is what your interested in, however usually the state law refers to the ADR for simplicity.

I am not a lawyer, I just googled it and had a brief read of the document. I think the compliance issue needs more investigation and it may need more than a signature from an engineer.

The test procedure mentioned in the ADR is documented in SAE document J839b which i can not find, but similar documents (google TP-201-02a for example) talk about all sorts of documentation and photographic evidence of test procedures and the results. They also talk about the test equipment that needs to be used eg accuracy, placement. Hopefully you don't need to test it like that or even worse have to get a NATA certified test lab to run the tests; that would cost...

I am kind of intrigued as to what is actually needed to get it passed. Tell us how you get on.

            Good luck

              infraredfotografy,

Please don't make any changes until you've had a proper talk with an engineer. It's almost irrellevant what you may have done it in USA, as here in Aus the road rules are much stricter.

My 4x4 is currently at a place that does custom 4x4 work, and of course they work closely with an engineer. I could run your crazy idea past them if you'd like?

Here's a list of NSW engineers (inspect only):

And another list of engineers who also perform work:

Yes, thanks a lot Glen_ep. Please tell them about my idea and quote the price for me, I would very appreciate that.
I don't need them to install, but I need only the man who is willing to test and sign the certification for me.

Although that Lambor door will be done with serious mods, I still give myself the chance to recover it back to its original condition with just a little bit difference.

The hinge that I got allows me to get out of the car without raising up all the door. It can be opened up to halfway of normal door, then raising up. So, even cops could not be seen if I really don't want to show them.

But your idea is absolutely what I need: certification before going ahead.

Nope mate, the Lambor door hinges are very strong steel. The mechanism will keep the door shut properly and there is nothing difference if you see from the outside.

To be honest, I have partners in USA and HongKong who are selling those ones, and if you know that the hinges are under the lifetime warranty, and the spring shock is under 2 years warranty, you will know the strength of this kind of steel. :P

Re: Lamborghini door for Prado - legal or illegal?

                        Hi infraredfotografy,
You have ambition and drive I'll give you that. I'm surprised your wife didn't go apeshit on you like she did with the snorkel proposal. Anyway, if this mod were on a scale, I'm not sure how it would sit.

                        Costs:
                        Time to install
Having to crawl out from your window when entering underground carparks
                        Engineers certificate
Cost of hinge and extra bits and pieces to get the job done

                        Benefits:
                        ?
Sorry, I fail to see the benefits... What do you reckon the benefits are?

 Why not make it like the Back To The Future car? It's cooler than the lambo 'coz it's from the future

                        Cheers

I know this is a thread about the legality and not opinion, but I'm sure the opinion of Lambo doors is the same in OZ as In the US.

Enough with the legalities of the mod, just go ahead and do it... Most of the led modifications and the sound system mods border on non-compliance - so why shouldn't the doors?
