  • Landcruiser Prado KZJ 90

    Hello Landcruiser friends
I am from Germany and we like to drive LandCruisers very much.
I like to show you my new styled Prado .
After a crash with a deer I replaced the front bumper to a steel front with a 5,40 ton winch.
Now we are better prepared to go in offroad areas .

    keep on offroading
    best regards
    Gerhard

now I undersand what can happen with the front diff
I saw the photos of the front diff from Glen' 95 series
I hope it never happes at my 90 Prado
oh !!! by the way my 90 is a Diesel 3,0 liter 125 hp
we have so high prices for petrol and Diesel here in Germany
so to drive a Diesel is the smaller unluck !!

        Hi Gerhard,
Getting your rear locker fixed will certainly reduce the stress on the front diff. If you have to replace it, an ARB air locker or an Eaton E-locker may be cheaper than a genuine Toyota locker and maybe easier to get.

Your not the only ones who pay high fuel prices.
Having front and rear air lockers in my Prado has made things much easier on the drive line, also having the auto trans helps, not having lockers makes 4wding alot harder, when you lose traction or pop a wheel up into the air, that spinning wheel has to get traction again, and it is the forces when that wheel gets traction again that does the damage to the diff or C/V.

I certainly wouldn't want to increase this apparent belief of a weak front diff... (I've done enough already) but...

A major factor with this diff is the "reverse cut" design. They've designed the ring/pinion teeth to be stronger in foward motion, to get the most out of the small size. This has sacrificed reverse strength. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechI...everseCutGears

My front diff may have blown in that big rut at Newnes, but I'm pretty certain it was already damaged. It had some hard times elsewhere, and was put under strain many times to snatch recover a monster patrol from deep mud holes.

Heat - yeah, I've checked temperatures occasionally in the the VIC high country, and after a big low range drive, I couldn't keep my hand on the front diff because it was too hot. The rear, and my mates Patrol were fine.

It just means you are doing a lot more recovery work then if you had diff locks installed.

              Hi
many thanks for your good explanations to the Roo and Glen .
It helps very much to understand more .
I already have a winch ( 5,40 tons ) but I was many times in hard offroad area and we could drive all , also without rear diff lock .
thanks again and good offroad times .
