  • A little help with some mods?

Hi guys, good to be back after a long time away (family dramas) Anyway, all that's done with and I'm back to setting up the trusty 90 ('02 V6 Advance) for some touring.

I have a few questions that I hope the guru's here can help me out with.

    1. Can I fit a second battery (under bonnet) to the old girl?
    2. Has anyone got some photos of a dig_options head unit fitted to this model?
    3. How do some people have the new type roof racks (like a 120 series) on their 90's?
    4. Once I have fitted my 2nd battery is there likley to be room to fit a compressor under there also?

That's about all I can think of right now, any help would be very muchly appreciated.

    Cheers
    C.

I think the 2nd battery goes in the passenger side rear but if you have ABS no 2nd battery. You can get a new battery tray to make the main battery bigger up to 12’’. Have a look at piranha 4x4. What do you mean by new type of roof racks like 120? 90 series are a gutter mount system hope this helps
    Cheers

This is a UK spec model and the roof rails came standard. I don't know anyone who has retro fitted 120 roof rails to a 90 series.

The parts from the UK model can be found here:

I've been told that Central Coast Wreckers (or something like that, in NSW anyway) sell the rails... I haven't checked up on this, nor am I interested in doing so... much prefer to use the gutters for my application.

Thanks for the info williade. That's exactly what I needed to know.

I need to check if my car is actually an ABS model?! Is there an easy way to tell? Before I dive into a second battery, though I find it hard to imagine not a single person has an ABS 90 series and not found a way to fit a second battery!?!

For the record I spoke with Dig Options about the head unit and they are going to send some photos of the unit installed in a 95 to me.

              Cheers

I had a 90s as my previous bus, which had the ABS brakes. The ABS doesn't get in the way of the fitting of a 2nd battery as the ABS is located on the R/H side [drivers side] the 2nd battery goes on the rear side L/H side, which is the same as non ABS models. On my old one i rewired and switch the batteries around so as the starting battery was in the dual battery tray and my deep cycle in the original start battery position. By doing this i was able to fit a larger deep cycle N70 size battery in that position. This is in reference to the V6 models
To tell if the car has ABS there are 2 giveawys 1 = ABS unit rh side in engine bay, alloy box thingy whit 4 brake lines coming out of it,and 2 also the ABS was always part of a package that included dual airbags so on the dash L/Hside there is no grab handle or recess that fits a tissue box rather it has a airbag panel
Behind the ABS unit adjacent to fire wall i was able to fit my ARB compressor in there.
As per the picture of the 90s with roof rails, you will also find them on grey imported Badged TX diesels which where produced pre 2000 year before Toyota Aust sold the diesels models, these models also had the mirror on the front left guard corner and a centre dash binnacle featuring an altometer and level gauge or something similar.
You will find a better range of roof rack options if you stick with the gutter rail options.
I do miss the old 90s especially when i see the pics coming thru of Declan and Glen etc pushing their 90s as my old one was set up to similar degree, and i can never find the $ to replicate it on the 120s.
                cheers

Thanks for the info Rags, I have ordered the dual battery tray thinking to myself I'll make it fit somewhere. Great to know it'll fit regardless.

I think this may answers why I said no ABS.

                    Piranha BTPRA4C
                    PRADO 90 SERIES
                    5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 PETROL
                    (Non ABS) BTPRA4C

                    FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
The cradle fits passenger side rear.
This cradle fits Prado 4cyl. and Prado V6 non ABS
To fit this cradle the charcoal canister must be relocated usually to the
driver side next to the brake booster. The hoses for the charcoal
                    canister have to be extended.
Bolt kit includes bolts and self drill screws to remount charcoal
                    canister on opposite side.
                    http://piranhaoffroad.com.au/index.p...y-btpra4c.html
The reason than say non ABS is the charcoal canister because is goes where the ABS unit is so if you can relocated the charcoal canister somewhere else you can fit the battery tray.

The charcoal canister can be relocated to the side of the battery tray,no major mod required. This is what i did when i fitted battery tray up,my tray was a Brown Davis tray, not sure if they still make them

Hmm.. but relocating the ABS sounds like a task for a brake specialist... so will be costly.

Ahhh you might just be onto something there DJD!!

Rags, when you mounted the charcoal canister forward on the battery tray did it make accesing the oil dip-stick and filler difficult? Or did you mount it to the new battery tray?

The canister was bolted to the side of the tray adjacent to engine, only required a bit of bending of the hose from the memory. There was no issues with accessing the dipstick but i though that the dipstick was on the R/H side but i maybe mistaking that for the auto dipstick ,it is now more than 12mths since i sold it.My memory is fading like my youth.
You definitly don't need to or would not consider moving the ABS

I'll post this here for anyone else looking to fit the 2nd battery to this model. Turned out pretty simple, just had to buy a few meters of vacuum hose and tap a new hole to mount the charcoal canister properly. I think all up it took about 2 hours.
