  • My Custom Rear Drawer/ Storage Build-Up

Ok, I know rear drawers and storage has been done to death, but for the sake of a new approach, I thought I'd share mine. It is still a work in progress so I'll post updates as progress is made but here's what I have.

Remembering back to my Tech Drawing days, I first sat down over several days following several trips and wrote down what exactly I wanted from my rear storage design. The main points were; drawers for recovery gear and tools, a partition for a fridge and slide, sufficient storage space for cooking gear and general camping gear and a smaller area for either an additional battery, compressor, fuse box etc. It also had to have the 2nd row far side seat in tact for my son and for the sake of more storage space, could extend beyond the 2nd row seats on the near side.

Essentially the design I have come up with is 2 drawers on the bottom, housed fridge partition on the far side, an equal sized partition on the near side where a large storage tub (or two medium stacked tubs) could slide in and above that a smaller partition for a smaller tub to slide in. The tubs would then be retained by loading straps. Directly behind the drivers seat is a smaller partition with a hinged lid that can house an additonal battery or compressor or fues box or all of the above (yet to decide).

As for material, I have decided to use anodised square tube as is available from Bunnings or Qublock. This will make a lightweight frame, strenghtened by cross-members and reenforced with MDF selves and sides ranging from 8-16mm.

I have tried my hand at Google SketchUp and if you'd like to have a look at the model, you can download it from http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehou...95dd0b1e2fb5a1 but you will need to get SketchUp first. It is free to download and use.

Constructive feedback alway welcome and I'll post progress as it happens.

Heya RogueAussie, I've spent the last 4months contemplating/considering/investigating drawers (guess how long I've had the car for... 4months!).

I don't know what your setup is like, but I've ended up installing a cargo barrier (~10kg) instead as the drawers were going to weigh too much (>60kg) for my liking. A shelf 1/3 the way up the cargo barrier and some plastic tubs have done the trick. What's more, the cargo barrier is much easier to install/remove if I ever need to transport large items.

I don't know what your setup is like, but I've got >320kg worth of accessories (twin rear wheel carrier, steel winch bar, roof tent etc etc) so I'm trying to shed weight wherever possible. On top of the 320kg, throw in a few people, some water, a jerry can or two of fuel, then clothing/food/chairs... it all adds up pretty quick and the GVM is looking menacingly close!

Anyhoo... good luck with the build and keep us posted! You may also like to look into Drifta drawers (if you haven't done so already) and check out how his drawers slide on plastic wear strips rather than steel runners
