  • To Lift or Lock?? Mod recommendations

    Hi guys,

    I am starting to think about what I will modify first on my fairly stock 90. I have a few things on my wishlist, however I am wanting to get some opinions about what mod's you guys think should come first. My wish list is as follows: (please suggest any other mods that may give me a good return!)

    * Lift kit.
    * Diff lockers or Air lockers
    * Chip
    * Exhaust upgrade.

    I have a list of cosmetic things I am working through that I am just ticking off as the cashflow allows. Next on that list is seat covers. I like the MSA's, and then perhaps some drawers. After seeing all the other folks that have made there own, I reckon ill have a crack at my own also.

    Below is a couple of pics of the 90 as it is now. I don't intend to do any extreme offroading in her, but I would like to be able to go offroad competently. The 90 is also my daily driver so it needs to remain comfortable...

    Any and all feedback is appreciated.

    It's a 90, doesn't need anything! Good looking list but I would scrap the chip and spend that on tyres. Nice Prado.

          I'm well out of touch with 90s these days but as BM said Glen's is a great build. There are a few that are worth looking at. Have a dig through the builds.

              Standard is 31". Simplest upgrade is 2" lift and 32" tyres (no extra mods required for tyre fitment). It's possible to run 32" tyres without 2" lift but mud flaps will need to be removed and tyres are likely to still rub at the front, so plan on some chopping. 33" definitely needs 2" lift plus either a body lift or lots of chopping.

              My opinion on what mods are first does depends on what you want to do with the 4wd / where you want to go. Generally speaking I'd say the best bang for buck is 2" lift and 32" tyres. If you then find limitations with that then setup then add a rear locker later. However again, it depends on where you're taking it. If sand is your favourite destination you'll find more use out of an awning and maxtrax than huge tyres or a diff locker. If it's muddy rainforest trails you'll want big aggressive MT tyres and a winch. For rough trails and rocks you'll need strength and traction (lift + strong tyres + diff locker).

              For tyre selection I suggest AT if doing general trails, road and sand. If on hard trails and/or lots of mud then definitely MT.

              A snatch strap and spade should be part of your essential gear. A full recovery kit + winch is better

                Oh as for engine/performance mods, of course we all like to have them, but they have little value for offroading (that's what low range is for). So if mindful of budget, increasing power is only worthwhile if regularly on sand or towing.

                    haha I thought that might attract a comment! What can I say... wants and needs don't always add up to the same thing... I don't tow and am rarely on sand, but I love high speed dirt and it's awesome for that.

                      Your comment is justified though.
                      I have the little 2.7L 4pot and it is slow and sluggish around town. But low engaged and it goes as hard as anything else offroad.

                      That being said. In time I will def be looking to supercharge it with the hilux kit

                        The 27 is a fantastic engine.. even supercharged it'll probably outlast the 34s

                          I have seen one of those little 2.7's making over 1400hp & run a low 7 at 203mph in GoodTimes Racing's manually shifted S14 Drag Car.
                          Tough little donk!

                              The OPs 90 is a diesel. No supercharging there

                              As Glen says;

                              2" lift.
                              Upgrade tyres.
                              Recovery kit.
                              If raising wheels on heavy trails = E locker rear.
                              If not raising wheels or largely sand driving = Detroit TruTrac LSD in rear.
                              Make your own drawers.

                              Or............the ultimate in 90 series performance, sell diesel and buy petrol and superchaaaaaaarge
