  • update sound system for RV 97's crap audio

I hate the sound system in my RV since I bought it. Especially when I open the doors' covers and found that the speakers are really #$@#.

Even I did install the Hometheatre in the car, but it seems that Police don't like my set up so much.

Two cops stopped my car in the city some days ago, and they required me to remove/change the DVD head unit of the system from the center of the dashboard to anywhere else in the car. But that's pain in the axx because the DVD head unit of my Panasonic hometheatre is not a small unit. Except the place I installed, there is no place that I can install it with the comfort of changing the disks by myself. So, I thought of upgrading the audio system in the car.

Those police men were also interested in my LED conversion all around the car. They took pics everything around the car with the excited faces, but also required me to remove/change some LED color (Ex: my rear view signals blue LED rings on mirrors, they said it must be changed from Blue now to Yellow, because when I turn on the signal, or Emergency lights, those LED rings will flash just like Police's cars. OOUUCH. ...Yeah, I will do  ).

It's funny that the man said "what the Fxxk" (with the smile always on his face) about 50 times when he looked around my rig. So, may be that was the reason he did not give me any ticket. Quite lucky, and OZ Police are nice.

So, I start (will be slowly as it costs a lot of $$$) changing the sound system for my RV today.

It costs a little time to fit 2 Pioneer 4-way 220W 6x9" speakers on the front doors without cutting the metal cover on the door, and keeping the original covers of the doors. So, I have to throw away the plastic cover and the metal cover of the speakers, just don't need it.

It is very amazing (even if without the amp as I haven't received the amp) that when I change the front speakers with the sound system got a much better level than before - even if it still has distortion with loud volume level because of w/o amp. But with medium and low level, the sound now is absolutely better.

Now the project will go ahead with 6 speakers + 2 sub. I will update later.

Please share your upgraded stereo system here if you don't feel boring.

So your current "home theatre" setup was only a dvd player, with normal speakers?
Why didnt you just set it up properly to not play video while driving, then the police would not have any problems?
    any photos?

That's fair enough... sounds like they weren't too bad considering they could have slapped you with a defect on the spot.

As a general rule of thumb, any LED's used as a feature are terrible :P

Yeah, sounds like Mr Plod didn't do you wrong at all.

It is common knowledge that DVD players in the front, operated in view of the driver are illegal and that LED's on the outside of the vehicle (UFO styling) is also illegal and for show purposes only.

And yeah, the outside LED's thing is pretty lame.

you could always try ebay for a cheap in dash dvd player to keep the police off ya back, most of them have 50watt x4channel built in, and just run some rca leads to the back of the car and just use it to run the sub amp to keep costs down. just a thought. cheers samo

absolutely I agree with you. That's my project now.

I will put a 2 DIN 7" GPS/DVD/TV/Bluetooth/Ipod player into the center of dashboard, connect it with 2 12.3" sunvisor (that already in the car now) and 2 9" DVD headrest on the back.

The first option for my sound system will be 6 Pioneer Coaxial 6x9" speakers 4-way + 2 12" subwoofer in the back.
The second option (if can be done) will be 12 Pioneer Coaxial 6x9" speakers 4-way + 2 15" subwoofer in the back.

            Slowly doing them now

No mate, Home theatre means Home theatre as it was from the factory. There's no connection between the crap standard audio + this system.

With the power from my 500W inverter, I can run up to 800W peak, so nothing wrong for my Panasonic Hometheatre 5.1 system in my car which only uses 420W input. Of course, it has a switch to be on/off manually.

              - DVD head unit on the front. (Connecting to 2x9" sunvisor LCD now)
              - 2 x front speakers on left and right front floor.
              - 1 x center controller in the right center console, right front of the gear box.
              - 2 x high (1m) speakers stay in the back of the car.
              - 1 x Sub-woofer stay in the back of the car.

So, when I stay in the car, the music is just... lovely @#$@#@ because the space is very narrow, and the density of music is very extreme.
I experienced that the music quality is even much better than many cars. It can produces output 800W total.

However, that's just my 2 cents experience. May be you don't like that.

here is one photo, the remote control is installed on the wheel, very comfortable on the road.

WTF Is that a home DVD player on your dash   and a remote control on your steering wheel. No wonder you got pulled over and very lucky not to get a fine. Or even luckier you weren't in an accident and have the DVD player go flying around the Cabin that would be a nasty sight

I don't agree 100% with you. Because I discussed with those 2 Police men about what is legal and illegal in my conversion. And here are some good news and not good news.

                  1- GOOD - Legal, and I don't have to remove/change:

                  - They like my eagle LED white color on the front head light. They said it is legal to keep the LED there like that. He took some photos of that LED light with an excited face.

                  - The LED bar with white color on the front of the mirror.

                  - The LED red ring around the mirror that was attached to the brake system, which will turn on RED whenever you press the brake is LEGAL also. This one only can be seen from the behind.

                  - The LED red ring around the tail light for brake light is legal. He said it is nice.

                  - The LED white ring around the mirror that attached with reversed system, will be turned on whenever you put the reversed gear on. This one only can be seen from the behind.

                  - The LED blue dome light.

                  - The LED yellow floor light

                  - The LED blue glove box, handle positions, around the speakers. - Good and ok to keep.

                  - The LED blue under the door, will be turned on when you open the door.

                  - The LED red ring around the whole rear windows which attached to brake.

                  - The LED red strip on the rear windows which attached to parking light.

2- NOT GOOD - Illegal, and I have to remove/change:

                  - LED red color with my name on left tail light, my wife's name on the right tail light is not legal -> remove/change to another shape like round.

                  - LED blue color that I put into reversed light area which always turns on blue with the parking light is illegal -> remove/change.

                  - The LED bar with blue color on the front of the mirror -> change to yellow is OK.

                  - LED blue color that I put into tail light for signal -> change to yellow is ok.

                  - LED blue ring on the mirrors for signal ( This one only can be seen from the behind.)-> change to yellow is OK.

                  - LED blue light for plate -> change to white is ok.

                  - LED blue for handle position -> change to white or turn off/on on demand is ok, rather than attach to parking light.

Re: update sound system for RV 97's crap audio

6 or 12 Pioneer Coaxial 6x9" speakers 4-way will sound terrible and they will take up alot of space and they´ll weigh a shit-ton.

You can get a very good 2-way or 3-way component setup for the front, nice co-axial 6.5" speakers in the rear doors to give some treble and highs to the rear seat passengers, good amps and a good quality sub instead of all that stuff and you´ll have much better sound quality and it will look much cleaner.

6x9" will never sound as clear and nice as round speakers, be they 6.5" or 8". You will be very happy with some high end 6.5" in your front doors (They fit without any mods and will sound the best with the grill in the doorpanel.) and 1" silk dome tweeters up on the A-pillars. Get matched passive crossovers, you don´t strike me as the type that would do well with active crossovers.

Sound deaden your door skins and cover the holes in the frame behind the doorpanel to block road noise and to reduce cancellation and rattles. This will make the bass tighter and treble clearer. Aim the tweeter properly to find the right spot, you´ll know what I mean as soon as you start turning them towards you and away while playing a song with good highs.

"So, when I stay in the car, the music is just... lovely @#$@#@ because the space is very narrow, and the density of music is very extreme.

Go to a car show or audio show and find a good SQ car, it should totally change your perception of music quality in cars.
Prado GX ´97, 1KZ-TE, 38" tires, Hella and IPF lights and a lot more stuff.

Once I saw a home DVD player on the dash - I was like - WTF. But idea is good. What other people suggest doing - is to have good - player and a separete 1din monitor - A player should be Alpine - as this is the best whats on the market. Right now - my rig - has FOCAL mid-bass and twitter, 6.5 inch Infity speakers - plan to change it to FOCAL or DLS. I have 2 amplifiers - 1 for subs - 2x10" soundstream - and 1 amplifier for all speakers in the car. Also I have a speaker mount in the rear - 5th door. Amplifier that I would suggest - is Magnat, Kikx, Vibe - do not buy cheap crapy Fusion ampliers - they really suck.
Proud Prado owner since 2007 - mods - 6 speaker system, 2x10" subs, 1,5" dobinson suspension, fleet-guard separator filter, HKS mufler, Pioneer 2-din system, toyota body-kit - rear spoiler.

                          thanks mate.

I removed the DVD Home theatre almost one month ago.

Now in my car it is:
                          - Kenwood DVD 6.1" touch screen with Ipod, Usb, FM/AM, bluetooth (ready), NAV (ready). This one also connected to 2 x 12.3" sunvisor LCD for my front passenger and me when we stop the car.
But I will throw in more 2 x 9" DVD for headrest. and one 19" LCD on the roof.

                          - 4 x 12" subwoofer (2 Kenwood, 2 pioneer) - the mix of those ones create a good feeling of bass.
                          - 4 amplifiers (all Kenwood and Pioneer). 3 running all subs. 1 runing 4 speakers.
Now I just have quite good pioneer 3 ways, but will upgrade to some Pioneer components when I get more $

                          - I will put 2 of 6x9" Pioneer on the rear gate like you too which I already bought those ones, but did not have time to put it in, and also one Pioneer component for the third row seat (actually I removed this row for subs' space). So will ad more about 2 amps.

Hi infrared. I was reading along and thinking - well this is all pretty interesting. Then I saw the photo and thought "WTF" is this! Don't you think it may be just a wee bit naff? I mean - a car is for driving isn't it? With all the other stuff on the vehicle, it must have been crying out "Pick Me" to the cops anyway. Each to his own but I'll bet the cops must have been nearly falling over laughing when they saw the DVD player on the dash - did they have a silly smirk on their faces and tears in their eyes? Good luck with your doof-doof. Cheers.

Cheers.
                              Hi Derb,

Yes, when the cops stopped my car in Sydney CBD (2 men), they were smiling (not laughing or silly smirk but surprised smiling faces) and keep the word "WTF" for around 50 times with the smile always on their faces. Also, they took several pics around the DVD and remote control on the wheel at that time. Anyway, they said "no ticket" for my jobs, and even they did not tell me what they will do with pics they got from my car.

Yes, car is for driving. However, if you read my last post in this topic which is just above your post (or you read my signature), probably you did not write this up.

I don't know what style you like, but for me, car is a must an enjoyable one. I don't care if it is old or new one, but I can upgrade many things for it if I think I need them. For my rig, it must be good enough to drive, strong enough to get off-road, comfortable enough for camping (double bed in car, hot shower in car, air compressor in car, DVD 19" roof top in car to run DVD and Wii Sport which I and my missus like so much - this 19" is in my priority wish list), powerful enough to run any 12V or 220v device I use (converted to 220V with 2000W continuous flow, 4000W peak, that's my limit), and music quality is good enough for my favorite.

                              Thanks for reading my topic.
